Most cars that are considered torquey might have 400 or more but from 3000RPM up till like 5000 they are below ours then surge to 400+ but only till 6500/7000RPM before they drop off or hit red line!!

Dynos measure actual wheel torque, but then when displaying the output, factor gearing (divide the actual measured wheel torque values by the overall gear ratio for that gear) to go back to the engine torque numbers. That needs to be done, or otherwise you'd see different numbers at each gear obviously. Some will throw in an estimated drivetrain loss percentage as well, which complicates things even further...yeah, always here people say the M3 has no torque but in fact its the other way around.

However, to me, the M3 still "feels" like it lacks power below 3500rpm compared to some 400lbs torque cars I've driven.

effectively what you have is a lance armstrong vs. a body builder in a bicycle race. the body builder may have legs twice as strong but he can only pedal so fast... whereas skinny athletic lance armstrong can pedal alot faster and use a lower gear so he doesn't have to be as strong... this allows him to go faster then the body builder. m3 vs. mustang or corvette.
Simple analogy obviously you have to account for weight, traction, etc.

See post #47 in this thread:Another good component of the concept of high rpm/short gearing concept is the 7 speed SMG/DCT boxes... especially in the m5/m6 which allows them despite their weight to compete acceleration wise with lighter cars with similar hp numbers. (may be different for DCT because IIRC it uses different final drive then manual)
