Had a chance to spend some time at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg and stretch the E92’s legs a bit with The Sandlapper Car Club. I’m still very much a novice at autocross, but that honestly made it more fun because I spent the day experimenting with the car and figuring out what worked best for me in a safe environment. Plus I only live 5 miles away.

The Potenza Races were probably one of the more interesting parts of the day. I’m usually a Michelin man but I got a good deal on the Bridgestones at Tire Rack ($160 per tire) last year as they are a competitor to the Michelin Pilot Cups. I thought why not.
They seem to want some heat in them before they really get sticky, which isn’t exactly ideal on a short autocross course. Cold, the rear was pretty playful once I started getting near the limit. After a few runs and some heat, you could definitely feel the grip coming in.
I also had fun experimenting with MDM versus everything off. I expected to prefer MDM, but I actually felt better with it off. The car felt more predictable to me when I could manage what the rear was doing myself rather than feeling the electronics step in. Again, novice driver here, so that may say as much about my driving style as it does the setup.
Same experiment with the DCT. I tried letting it do its thing in auto and then switched over to the paddles. For this particular course, paddles were definitely better for me. Being able to hang onto 2nd gear longer worked really well on the short layout instead of having the transmission decide to shift when I didn’t necessarily want it to.
I played with the suspension settings too. Sport felt good, but Track seemed to work better through the slalom. The car felt more settled during the quick transitions and gave me a little more confidence carrying speed through there.Still plenty to learn, but that was probably my favorite part of the experience, making a run, changing something, making another run, and actually feeling how the car responded.
And, of course, hearing that S65 through the Valvetronic with the valves open and my foot buried in it was worth the trip by itself.

Dialed in camber and stiffened the Ohlins a bit. Also working through the “should I sell for a 911” decision tree lol
Now I'm trying to get rid of the active headrest fault code by bypassing the AHR connector with a 1.8-ohm resistor. Does anyone know if the smaller connector is for the AHR? it doesn't look like the connectors I've seen on other posts but it's the only connector under the seat with nothing plugged into it. Thanks.

Keep in mind the car will be 18 years old on August 8th next week (I took delivery at the BMW Performance Center near Greer, SC on 8/8/08.). Oh and the grass needs cutting. Typically, when I wash my car, it usually rains the next day or very soon after - and now I see rain in the forecast... More often than not, the rain serves to wash the car. If you look carefully you'll see the carbon roof is in bad shape due to the clear coat failure. It's scheduled to be refurbished the last week of next month as a birthday present for her. Nothing wrong with a little bit of TLC to keep her looking her best. I suppose car years are not the same as people years regarding aging. Sort of like dog years. But she has been kept in good shape. Lots of things still to get done though, before the end of the year such as Valve Covers, Injectors, Spark Plugs, and fixing the sagging roof lining. A nip and tuck is all she needs.

Replaced chewed up plastic jack points with billet aluminum ones.
Did a complete teardown after the motor locked up on my second track day. Typical LCI failure, main bearing #1 went, and took out rod bearings 1/5, and the next main bearing over. Looks like oil starvation, as the filter and housing were quite dry, but plenty of oil in the pan. No hole in the block, no bang or any loud noise, no oil trail, just locked. I've used Redline 5w40 in the past, but it had LiquiMoly 10w60 at the time the motor went. I don't think that mattered in this case. It gets hot here in Utah summers and we regularly hit triple digits in the summer.
Temp gauge spiked past the 3/4 mark at time of failure but it was too late. I'm just glad it went in the middle of a corner while downshifting, because seconds before I had a c8 z06 up my ass on the straight, which could have ended horribly.
FWIW, it had ACL wcp coated bearings done a few years ago with BE-specific ARP bolts. The car is mostly stock aside from nitrons, front sway, 18x10.5 and 295 re71rz tires, pole positions, bolt-ons and a tune.
I'm in the process of sourcing a complete donor motor now, and will do rod bearings again along with a csf cooler and weld in oil pan baffle. Hopefully that adds some longevity.

Installed wheels that purchased from another member and did white wrap on our all CF hood.
