Does the S65 have a whining noise

I picked up an E92 M3 recently and I hear whining noise especially at 1.5-3k RPMS. The whining happens both when driving and revving it. I’ve read it could be the waterpump, but the car is not leaking and my engine doesn’t overheat. Also read it could be powersteering or belts. Is this just a normal noise from the already noisy S65?

If it is a whistle or like a turbo spooling up, then it can also be a crack in your plenum.

Doesn’t sound quite like a whistling turbo. Its more like a supercharger almost. It sounds like a lot of air being sucked in. The car came with a K&N air intake afaik but the noise was concerning me.

This may sound odd, but you aren't hearing the radio are you? Every one of these that I've owned or driven has a little bit of electrical feedback that follows the revs.

Timing chains and gears

The S65 does make a lot more mechanical noises than most engines. A video will help us determine if it's normal or not. From your description it might be a worn pulley or accessory driven off a pulley - eg waterpump.

I had a wistle sound on mine, like a supercharger almost. It was the plenum leaking. There is a thread on it somewhere in here. Its a o-ring in the rear

Probably your power steering pump. Those tend to whine when they're either getting a little older or they need a fluid change. Or both. I'm no mechanic, but my last E92 M3 whined quite a bit from the power steering pump and it probably needed replacing

This was my inkling as well - worn pulley. Grab a stethoscope and give each pulley a listen.

In my experiences I’ve only heard whining noises if power steering fluid is low. You don’t need to add a lot. In my 10 years I’ve only had to add fluid twice. For how little I’ve had to put in, it’s crazy the noise I heard prior. I’ve literally only had to add like 6oz at most. Our power steering pump is a finicky bastard if at all low. Just pull the cap and see if the fluid is even touching the built in dipstick on the caps bottom side.
