5W-50 Recommended by TroyJeup

Here is an interesting fact on 3 of the best na motors out there; #ls7, #gt350, #s85 all have almost identical rod bearing clearance (ls7 is even tighter than s85), yet you don't hear of bearing issues on the two of these that have adequate rod side clearance and use 5W oil. The one that uses molasses for oil is a different story. For those that are using 10w60, make the change or be left behind with a failed bearing. It's not the bearings that are the issue!

People wonder why I recommend 5w50 over 10w60 for the S85 or S65. Here is a pretty clear comparison between the two. You can see the liqui moly 10w60 had 3-times the wear than the redline 5w50. Imagine the difference the two have on engine wear. Check out "Piotr tester" on YouTube for a review on your favorite oil. Chances are he has it on there as he has over 300 videos. I bet you won't find a better oil than the redline 5w50.

My feedback on 10W-60 (nothing to do with what he's referring to above, since I just saw the posts yesterday)

I tried the Twin Turbo M Oil (10W-60) and when the temps warmed up, it stayed under 200* (looks to be 190*)

I then tried LiquiMolly (10W-60) and the temps took longer to warm up then Twin Turbo M Oil, and hovers at 200*

Anyone had similar feedback to the above?

I’m running Amsoil 5W50 with car is fast to dissipate heat and warms up faster. Also I get No rattle of any sort on startup with the car.

Troy Jeup is regarded as the best S85 engine builder in the country. He has built around 450 S85 engines so far. Probably the most knowledgeable person regarding the S65/S85 engines. I'm going to make the switch to 5w50.

Mobil 1, Castrol and others also make 5W50. I have been running 0W40 or 5W40 since changing bearings in 2014, but will probably go to 5W50. I recently changed thermostats to the hotter one Troy Jeup recommends.

None of those oils are ester based like Redline. The ester and high TBH is what makes redline special.

Liqui Moly 10w60 is a thicker oil than the BMW Twin Turbo oil despite having the same weight. That can account for the temp differences you are seeing. A thicker oil heats up slower and keeps temps higher.

That is why I stick to BMW OEM oil or run lighter for LiquiMoly and Redline.

This. So, why shouldn't we listen to him? Especially those of us in colder climates?

We have.

I've been running 10w60 for 162,000 miles and everything is fine. Everyone is an oil expert now days.

I've been running RL 5w50 in my car for a couple years now.

If you are referring to Troy, he’s probably touched more S85s than BMW service techs. I wouldn’t say he’s everyone. I would say he’s someone knowledgeable in this field.

There are many factors why the RBs have issues. He’s just pointing out one maintenance part of the whole issue. Even though he’s saying it’s the main thing. (I doubt that's really the main thing).

From years of researching the S85 platform, I can tell he is the Go To man for anything S85. I don't know him personally or have had any work done by him but his reputation proceeds him. If you go to his instagram all he does is build S85 engines with some S65 and a couple other BMW V8 Turbo engines sprinkled in. From what I read his waiting list for S85 builds is over 1 year long from the backlog.

There are a bunch of 5.0L all the way to 6.0L S85 engines with his name on them running around out there.

What does he do when he rebuilds these motors?
Are they damaged/blown?
Or is he blue printing and boring/stroking them?

What oil have you been using in the bold above?
What bearings did you use?

I used WPC treated stock. Options were fewer in 2014. I use mostly Mobil 1 OW40 but have used Castrol 0W40 and 5W40 once or twice and once I used Rotella T6 5W40.
