I would think if the brakes were bled incorrectly, he should have noticed a big problem almost immediately the first few times he got on the brakes. Sounds like he was well into his drive before the brakes failed...
possibly not sure. thought a bubble could form further back so work for a bit then cause an issue. dont know how brakes would just fail. cut lines, forgot to put pads in? fairly simple system but who knows could be accurate.

if its 20k the insurance will often want to total because it saves them money when they resell the salvage title.
If the insurance totals it and the frame is not bent, the OP should tell the insurance he wants to pay the salvage value (plus maybe a bit of a discount) and turn it into a track car!

salvage value would be close to 20k so then he would have a 40k wrecked car with salvage title. and thats just to get it back to stock not to make a track car of it.
Those tires do not look as if they have seen any track action...maybe op has track tires in back seat?
I dont understand how the pedal would go to the floor if brakes were bled properly. Did you swap pads and forget to press and pump the brake pedal AND did not have to use the brakes until the accident??

i understand that. i feel sorry for you and your car. hopefully it works out for you.

I haven't been on the board since friday night. You guys so badly wish this happend on a race track so you can ridicule me. Too bad. My reputation as a fast driver is intact. This was a mechanical failure. Not me.
Your reputation as a fast driver never existed outside of your head and perhaps your Playstation 3. You've done 2 HPDE's and haven't been moved up or signed off solo. You aren't fast bud.

I won't say I'm sorry about your car. I'm glad you weren't hurt and that no one else was hurt, but maybe this will teach you some humility and at least keep you off the track so you and your mad skillz don't take someone else out.

The pedal behaved normally at first, but then it sank halfway thru braking. Luckily in a way (silver lining?) I was able to slow down with the initial braking before they failed so the hit could have been harder and done more damage.
then you didn't bleed the brakes properly.
The same posters on here have nothing better to do than jump on everyones thread they feel like being a jerk to, cross-referencing and posting linkes and timestamps to other threads owners make and make their "case" on why it is not possible for one person to do this, call them out and be a total jerk to them after an accident. Out of the OP and the regular posters on this thread, who is really the sad state of affairs? A cocky driver who may be a little over confident but otherwise clearly that does not mean he deserves an accident, or someone with a very twisted sense of empathy or lack of empathy where their empathy is dependent on whether a person fits makes them feel irritated or inadequate.

I have had a 20k repair and yours looks like it could be close to that. If it truly is 20k you may be totaled given you have an 08 but you probably will be on the cusp. You should talk to your insurance and even if you had to pay the difference to them (lets say they would cover it if the damage was 15k but total it if 20k), it would be worth the 5k out of pocket because that is a lot cheaper than getting paid the market value of the car and then trying to find another 08 for 40k that you like. The repair itself is not severe, but rather the work involved and parts is just hugely expensive so it would be absolutely fine.

Does anyone else laugh and wonder why some of these posters have that much free time to cross reference posts and "call people out"? I personally have zero idea or remember every random post, nor would I take time out of my busy life to cut and paste links and build an argument to call someone out. If you are that bothered or worried about someone else, than you are one miserable person TP and 1MM and whoever else posted.

Not that there is any blame, but it is certainly possible after changing your brake fluid etc there was some type of tiny hole or connection a bit loose where the system lost pressure. Live and learn and that is how we learn things in life. The OP will probably be the best person to change brakes and fluids after this as I cant think of anyone who will be more careful doing a brake job in the future!

Yea a complete failure is definitely unusual... I would have thought a leak in this case or something similar, but even so, it would not take very long for the fluid to all be pumped out. A small leak in a brake system will cause a loss of fluid very quickly with the kind of pressure breaking applies. I don't know how far the OP was into his drive but obviously he made it out of his neighborhood.

Maybe a little bit of air in the system wouldn't be noticed right away but it would take a lot of air to cause enough gas compression in order to result in a complete brake failure.

Maybe the OP will eventually figure out what happened assuming things occurred as he said it did. I would certainly be examining all those brake lines though.

Heck. I would crash getting out of my driveway if I did not pump the brakes after the pad swap to get everything seated.

Some people actually have memories and you reap what you sow...it's not lack of empathy, its a response to OP being an arrogant braggart, calling out our advice as blatantly false, then asking for help & sympathy...it's like the after school special where the bully/asshole makes a fool of himself and everyone laughs?? What's the moral here? That even asshats deserve sympathy or that Karma's a bitch??? I think the latter :D

finally a halfway decent post from you :)

keep in mind half the people bashing him here coulnd't even change their own brakes and pay people to "build" their cars.
Don't all modern cars have a split brake system (IIRC FR to RL and FL to RR) so that complete brake failure is quite unusual? I've had brake fluid losses in old cars in the past but a couple of brake pedal pumps would normally get you stopped.
Even if there has been a loose brake bleed nipple on one caliper the other half of the system should still have worked.
Longwong you can't claim you don't play detective and have a straight face. I was just glad you had a post that wasn't about oil.
OP, are you sure you want to be posting pics of your wreck and at the same time talking about how you just maintained the brakes yourself? I'm sure you'll mention brake failure to your insurance and given the amount of money involved here, they may just dig around a little more on this one than on a normal claim.

Bickering on this thread aside, when you talk about how easy it is to do brake maintenance and then this happens, you do look like an asshat. Please stick to wiper-blade replacements and leave anything more complicated to the professionals.
