The answer to the original question is a 5 litre mustang drop top, all day, every fucking day. It's just a rental, fantastic engine, drop top experience in fair weather, reasonably priced and no issues with it being too fancy or an exotic. No brainer...... power poles......... jesus h.
Soft top no fun in rain, and no point paying a premium to rent it if the weather is going to be rainy. I sunburn in 15 minutes, so my rag top isn’t down for long stretches (even with sunscreen) - and yes, I have one but not a ‘stang. Power poles is just the old Mustang joke.
It is great to have some fun with a rental car, but on a long trip the fun can quickly become annoying, uncomfortable. If the OP is up for it, great.
We’re planning a trip of over 5,000 miles in September. Taking the X5, leaving the RAM and the convertible at home.
RAM is just slightly less comfortable than the X5, has more room especially in the bed, which is not 100% dry even with a cover. Fuel economy 20% or more worse than X5. Harder to park in some of the places we’re going.
Convertible is more noisy and also gets worse mileage. Taking it on some fun drives next year, instead. 40 years old, so maybe a little more risky if it breaks along the way.
