He tipped off my mother, who got us out of bed in the early morning before dawn. (In front of our on base house was just desert with mountains in the distance.) We were too far from the detonation to hear anything, but when it went off some 150 miles or so away from us, the sky went instantly bright. Some time later, a moderate breeze (the pressure wave) went by. A few years later, the U.S. stopped atmospheric testing.
