I know our engines burn a little oil but c'mon!

So, like many of you, I have had to add a 1/2 to 1 qt of oil every now and again. But I just had my car serviced back on 2/18 and the car is already calling for a qt of oil! About 2 weeks before that service I also had to top the beast off. WTF...

Anyone else experienced such rapid oil degredation?

Guess I'll swing by the dealer tomorrow and see if I can get another free top-off

I had my 1200 Mile service back in June 2009, done 7000 mile since and havn't had to top up yet

The oil consumption rate for the S65 engine is very unpredictable from car to car...

From my own personal research, I have polled over a 100 M3 owners all over the world in the past two years, and the results seem to suggest that our engines will burn 1-liter of oil per 5000 miles on average.

The owners manual states that an oil consumption rate of 1-liter per 1000 miles is 'normal'. I call BS on that oil consumption rate!

Topped of 1/2 qt once in 9k so far

1 quart every 3k miles or so.

it's seriously unpredictable...i last got an oil change at 12000km and didn't have to top up(still had 1/4 on the bar) till 19000km...added 3/4qts ...now it's been 1000km since..and 1/4qt is gone...

I do notice that when I drive the car harder it tends to drop faster...also if the car is not at 100 degrees before you push, it tends to drop a bit. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence, but it happens everytime since I like to monitor my oil ..it's really weird

12k miles so far, had to add 4 qts plus i had a free yearly oil change at 8600 from the dealer..

EXACTLY....that's why I'm all WTF?? I do drive her hard but not every single day. The only other contributing factor is I rack up the mileage like a mo fo.

im similar

+100 on these engines having a varied amount of oil consumption . I've only had to add 1/2 quart to mine and it's at 16k miles, but I also change the oil every 7500 miles.

If these engines don't have a large mechanical variance from one to the other, then why the hell do they burn such different amounts of oil??

I know mods and driving style have a lot to do with it but I can't see it being the cause of such a dramatic difference that some are reporting.

Finally after several oil changes I realized that the +1qt would come on very fast right after my oil service. THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH MY MODS or DRIVING STYLE! It was because it was underfilled during the oil service. Once the oil level is dialed in I was good for 7k miles when it was time to change my oil anyways. BMW mechanics are cursing the day BMW decided to go with this electronic dipstick. If your car is burning through a qt every 2-3k, I would say you have issues with your engine, unless of course you are doing some aggressive tracking every weekend, even then, it's a bit excessive.

I don't see how a dealer could really underfill this car. The don't have the M specific oil on tap - they have to pour it out of bottles just like we do. They have to open and pour the proper number of bottles. The only way they are underfilling is if they only put in half of a bottle.

That aside, has anyone had luck with getting the dealer to top off? Mine says they can't because BMW won't expense the bottles under service, and it's not part of the "scheduled" service maintenence. I didn't really fight with them on it, since I'd rather just have a couple of $15 bottles around I can fill up from home, instead of having to go into the dealer anyhow.

I have had luck getting mine topped off for free.

That's crazy. I got my last oil change in early November and I am still at the full mark.

I drive about 500 miles per month, fyi.

I have the car for almost 16K can so far I have not once top off any oil yet.

Mine burns about 1 quart every 8K. I drive it like an animal.

Break in was not per manufactures spec.

I put in nearly a quart (one liter) after 4k kilometers so mine's a burner I guess.
