My Turn? Throttle Actuators

Recently picked up a 2011 e90 with 64k miles.

Quickly got rid of the chrome / amber, added some wheel spacers, and picked up an icarly adapter. I was about to pull the trigger on the BPM test pipe / tune combo. This morning my car decided to go into limp mode on my morning commute. It threw a lot of errors:

Engine Malfunction. Reduced Power.

DSC Fault

DBC Fault

Start Assist fault

I connected icarly and ran diagnostics. It gave me a lot of faults and suggested I clear them and rerun.

I did this, and then I got three faults through icarly:

- Code: 002B16

- Fault: check at lower top

- Code: 002B57

- Fault: Engine torque is not adjustable CAN

- Code: 005E19

Next time I started the car it gave me the above plus "Increased Emissions".

I went ahead and replaced the battery as it seemed to be original. Reset all the errors and after some light driving, got the same faults again.

Time to pick up some actuators with my test pipe / tune money?

I also saw somewhere that I might want to replace the intake control valve and the spark plugs while I am at it.

Not according to my local dealership. The service manager specifically said it was not covered even by the emissions warranty.

Are you doing both 'while at it'? Costly, yes, but the other actuator is not too far behind. Gets less painful if you diy and costs right about your tune/TP budget.

Your car is definitely covered. Ask your service manager to research it. Or call BMW NA directly, they will have the info.

I went through the same a week after buying my 2008. I believe it was 7 year 70k miles. I was under the miles but over the allowable timeframe due to my car in service date.

Not in TX: CA and a few north east and north west states are covered by the 7/70 emissions warranty:

Ugh.. I spent a couple years and California and all I got to enjoy was the draconian emission restrictions with my S4.

Yes, I will do both, the control valve as well. Maybe spark plugs...

Anyone know if ECS Tuning is the best price for new OEM actuators? I am also considering the gear replacement route.

Luckily this car is a true luxury to me and my other commute option is my bicycle... I have time.

It's a big money fix. Someone had a screen shot of emission warranty and I could swear it something like throttle actuator ....let me try and find it

According to the info in this thread, that is incorrect:

They extended the warranty on the idle control valve.

No they didn't, that was for the idle air control valve.

Closing the loop for future searchers...

Everything seems to be cleared up. Replaced both actuators (p/n: 13627838085) and the idle control valve (p/n: 13417838024). It was only one of the actuators faulting, but I went ahead and did everything at once.

It seems my old parts might be worth something to the more adventurous DIY'er.

I really appreciate these forums! You guys prepared me by convincing me to get the icarly app / module and then had a great write ups on what the problem was and the different ways to fix it.

Saved me a lot of time and money!
