Yokohama ADVAN AD08 vs AD08 "R"

Anyone know how's the new Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 "R" is compared to the older Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....N+Neova+AD08+R

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....VAN+Neova+AD08

I'm looking to replace my AD08 and can't decide which to go with for the track.

Currently running TE37SL 265/35/18 & 295/30/18

I asked the same question a little while back, what I gathererd is they have better treadwear but it is from making the tread thicker so there is more of it. Kind of like the ps2 to pss. One of the track rules for a certain class is they have to have a certain treadwear rating, to meet this rating they made the tread thicker. I am sure there are more differences but not sure.

In a test in Japan ( by Yoko) they showed that the AD-08R was 1-2 seconds faster around a track than the current AD-08 ( which isn't bad for a street tire).

I was expecting less actual tread life based on this increase in stickiness.
You can't tell by the side wall rating as the tire mfrs play around with this alot.

The AD08R's are supposed to replace the AD08's. Should be a much better tire all around. Those will be my next set of street tires.

Treadwear is very biased with no real governing body having explicit rules / guidelines.

As for making the tread thicker...did the overall diameter change or did they make up some of that dimension by going with deeper troughs (inwards)?

I can also see the compound changing as well (to make it a better tire obviously). But I wouldn't use the treadwear rating to definitly say that it is stickier.

Tire rack has these up on their site now ( check out the testing they have done). In our sizes the tread is the same ( 10/32's) on the new and the old versions.

+1

They are also supposed to handle track heat better so it'll last longer before overheating. That'd be impressive as the AD08 was already pretty good!

Nice find. Too bad most of the other tires don't have a lot of tire size options.

I'm putting my money on slower than RS3, yet significantly more expensive.

The regular AD08 looks like it's been discontinued anyhow.

....and I remember a time when the RS3's were the cheapest Extreme tire.

Its too bad they haven't come out with proper 18" sizes. I know a lot of people run 295/30/18 in the rear but I don't like that option considering its 1" smaller diameter than stock. 295/30's are a good 19" size. It seems to defeat the purpose of going with 18" wheels and then putting 19" tire sizes on them.

They finally have the proper size for ZCP wheels (255/35R19 and 275/35R19). Just ordered today. Definitely have been waiting for these for awhile now.

My dilemma is this:

I picked up a nail in on of the rear's and need a replacement (can't be patched). Fronts 7/32 and remaining rear is 5/32. These are on my 18" track wheels so it's not a daily.

Do I...

-buy 4 new AD08 R F/R or
-2 New Rear AD08 R or
-1 New Rear AD08 (The other rear has 5/32, is this too much of a differential between 2 rear tires as the new one will be 10/32).

I was tracking once/month but since my wife and I had a kid in July, I haven't gone and don't know when I'll go next.

What do you guys think I should do?

1 new rear AD08 while supplies last and have tirerack shave it for $15.

It's too bad they didn't include the RS3 in that comparo.
Maybe Ben@TireRack.com could chime in here??

AD08s are great tires off the shelf--but they lose grip quickly, as they heat-cycle.

Mounted a set on my GT3. Was at Watkins Glen this past week and was very happy with them. They have very good grip and very consistent tire, that's the big plus for me. They easily handled 30-40 minute sessions as long as you managed them through out the session. Also rained second day, they did pretty well in the rain. Would buy again.
