MDM in the e93 M3?

Hey all,

Was reading the comments from today's thread on questions asked of BMW M Engineer, Jurgen Schwenker concerning 1M insights.

In the question below, he was asked about MDM mode.

We plan to purchase either the e93is or the e93 M late this Fall. My question is this: Can you get the e93 M3 with MDM capability? Cause if you cannot, I assume that controlled drifting is not possible in that car.

Here is the question Schwenker was asked about the 1M:
----

Why is it that the DSC regulator kicks in much more directly in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé, in comparison with the BMW M3 for example?

“DSC on” prevents the back of the vehicle from skidding, while “DSC off” and “MDM mode” are used for targeted drifting. The adjustment we have chosen ensures driving stability and security in critical driving situations, e.g. high transverse acceleration with vertical excitation or strong acceleration in bends for driving stability and security. The special characteristics of the engine in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé – strong torque and spontaneous response – require that the DSC should engage at the decisive moment.

I find it very hard to drift with MDM and of course it's impossible with DSC on. To be able to anticipate rear wheels response to throttle application while drifting (which in my opinion is a key component to controlled power slide) you will need to have DSC completely off. MDM is cool in spirited street driving and some fun in cornering but anything more serious than that it will definitely interfere.

MDM doesn't allow you to drift... I like it though as it helps me from spinning out or going off when I'm at the track but doesn't really interfere as DSC on does.

too scared to do DSC off..

I can attest, the E93 M has MDM.

You can't drift in MDM mode anyways. MDM is about half way between DSC on & DSC off.

Why does the BMW M Engineer say this then?

“DSC on” prevents the back of the vehicle from skidding, while “DSC off” and “MDM mode” are used for targeted drifting.

I owned a 2009 e90 M3 and in MDM mode I could easily and safely oversteer without making the situation unsafe. Was a lot of fun. So my question is, can you do this in the e93 M3?

e90 or e93 is the same... why would it be different? (in that regard)

you can go sideways in MDM but it's not the same as DSC off.

Okay, cool. I think that the suspension and engine are enough to pay the difference between the M and the 335is
