M3 aFe filter DIY install instructions

The instructions consist of two simple pictures and about 5 steps. The install should take you between 10-20 minutes. I am not responsible for any errors during your install.

This is what your filter will look like when you unbox it.

This is what your OEM filter looks like in the car.

Here is how you take one out and put the other in.

Great DIY! Got me motivated to do mine and it was closer to 10 minutes going slow. Here are my $0.02

Open a beer and eyeball everything
Loosen the hose clamp on the far left
Unscrew the cover to the airbox
Pull out the stock filter by pushing it towards the right and pull the hose in the opposite direction to the left
Replace it with the AFE
Put everything back.
Set down your half full beer, and go for a spin. *growl* when you crank it up!

The ONLY tricky part according to me is lining up the airbox lid back, make sure its flush with the base and if you are using too much force, you are bending or stressing something.

Varun, thanks for your feedback. Yeah there is definitely more than one way to do this. I actually wrestled my filter out instead of loosening the hose clamp which I found would be absolutely necessary to install the new filter without damaging it. I foolishly tried to hold that plastic piston in while trying to put in the new filter. So I loosened the hose clamp on the left and was able to lift it enough to align the new filter with the hose, then finally push it into place.

Got mine from HP Autowerks yesterday..What a fast service..
Installed in less than 10 min. Gosh..the sound it makes at low RPM when you rev it up and a little more raspier on mid-high...

All and all, a nice $90 well spent..

Observations:

- The filter is slightly smaller than the OEM filter
- The sound is much meaner and more pronounced
- I don't really like the idea of a "spring" holding the filter in place.

Did anyone else notice that you could easily peel back the filter to reveal the intake on the manifold side? Maybe the OEM was like this as well, but I didn't check.

just installed mine very easy and straight forward thanks badfish not hard but good to have the instruction, went for a quick spin and you could definitely hear it sucking in air much more then before...i wish I would have taken the car out before I installed it, but I could still tell the difference...

Do you need a specific Torx bit set to remove the screws?

Helped a ton! Thanks very much, really appreciate all the effort. All of these DIY's make life a lot easier for non-mechanically inclined folks like me.
