S6 - Life on the edge.

So today I played around a bit with S6 on an isolated road. For those that don't know it, LC is great for the automatic shifts at redline, but not really needed. So I turned off DSC, placed the car in S6, with everthing else in the most aggressive settings.

Now w/o using LC, floored it. So the DCT revs to around 4k then drops the clutch. HOLY F**CKING S**T. For a few seconds until the tires grab on, feels like your floating in place. Next thing you know your starting to fish tail so I let off the throttle a bit to keep from flying off the road. Tires engage and the shhift lights go crazy, so shift into second and look in the rearview. Giant smoke cloud and probably half my tires are still back there. Just wow, more than enough torque to play. Anyway, thought I'd share. Slowly discovering all the features on the car. DCT may not be perfect, but its getting damn close.

The only problem I have with all this, once you get going DSC is fully off. I wish there was an in between mode that would let you have fun off the line then engage the MDM mode. LC is limited to once every 3-5 miles, but this method is repeatable. Anyway, I like my tires so letting everyone else try this one out.

The 3-5 mile thing kinda sucks for darg strip use. I want to be able to make runs without having to drive around the pit for 15 minutes.

@ Dascamel ... cooooooooooool ... so it worked for you too!!!! .... i love it!!!!!!! and then its just timing the shift lights to change ... ... the 2 times when i tried it i wondered why was the car not moving .... cause i just wanted to get 0-100km/h and 1/4 mile times for my car without using LC ... seems like this is launch control without using launch control ... hehe

You could manually switch to S6 (DSC off) and after you get going, push the "M" button where you have programmed MDM.

Have you tried that? Curious to know what happens. I kind of doubt the car will keep shifting at redline like it does normally with LC. But I'd love to be proven wrong. Even if it doesn't your suggestion isn't bad since you could still complete the shifts yourself.

How exactly does launch control limit? Mine hasn't locked me out or anything like that after repeat use.

I thought that S6 was Launch Control, anything less than that was just S5 with DSC turned off.

No, S6 can be used as a shift mode regardless of launch control. DSC just has to be off.

Yeah true, but can always use S6 w/o the LC. Watch the lights, timing will become second nature.

After you use the LC with the flag and all, then you need to drive a few miles before it resets.

Not to menton you should wait for more than that just out of desire to not have your drive train die prematurely. I know its an //M but its still mechanical and can still break from excessive wear and tear which I think we might nall agee LC over and over again can be described as.

Do a search, there are a ton of threads about it already including many videos posted demonstrating launch control.

I'm curious why spinning your wheels into a cloud of tire smoke is better than using launch control.

LC also will have the same effect. Minimum rpm is around 4k on that also, haven't tested it. The cloud of smoke was not planned or intended, I like my car and tires. More surprised about the cloud then anything else. Just wasn't expecting a clutch dump like that. Some form of traction control like MDM would still be nice in S6 for more stable automated launches. Yes I know, go buy a MT...

I haven't had the pleasure of sampling the M3's LC yet but the whole object of having a LC in the first place is to help control the wheel spin and traction to obtain the best compromise of each, thus producing the fastest forward motion and acceleration.

Excessive wheel spin does not sound like it's doing it's job effectively and unless I am mistaken I think a skilled driver could do a better job.

I have reported similar/poor results with excessive wheelspin using LC. Leaving with a bam, but also a bit slowly in a cloud of smoke has been my experience on more than one use. It was not a traction/wheelspin managed launch as it is supposed to be and other have reported. Have not used it enough on a wide enough variety of surfaces to be sure mine is not working but I have my suspicions.
