Dynolicious - Dyno in your pocket
I bought this last night for my ipod. It's only $13 and they claim 0-60 times to be +/- 0.08. I can't get it calibrated yet, but it still functions without calibration. I played around last night with the G meter, and I'm going to do some 0-60 and 1/8 mile runs later on. There's a perfect spot to put the ipod/iphone, too. Inside of the arm rest there's that little rubber piece that is exactly the same width as the ipod. I have a rubber case on mine and it sticks like glue in there.

That looks very cool!
How does it work though? How can it know what the car is doing? |

It uses the accelerometers in the iPhone. My guess is it takes hundreds of points a second, makes a curve, and the area under the curve is your speed. With that, it can calculate 0-60, 1/4, etc.

So only works with iphone then? What about if you only have an ipod, how does it work with that?

It seems to be using the accelerometers built into iPod--I don't own one but I assume it has accelerometers for managing the interface--and then integrates that to get to velocity and distance. It's accuracy will depend on the sensitivity and accuracy of the accelerometers.

Let us know your results once you have it calibrated and run some tests. I have been wondering about this myself. Edit: my bad on the error number margin. So I guess the results might be pretty accurate, at least for acceleration. I don't know how valuable the other results are. 1.5mph for trap speed seems like a big margin. But it still might be fun, and is a good excuse to thrash on your car. Also, I saw there is a competitor called g-tac that only costs $5. Not sure how similar it is. The ratings are not as good as they are for Dynolicious.

I like this app. I played with it all day yesterday, did acceleration runs, and was doing skid pad tests at an empty parking lot last night.
It actually works very well in my iPhone and yes it works with iTouch also but not the other iPods. I've found that it records more accurate results only if secured properly. It has to be fixed solid onto a part of the car and not loosely to prevent mounted vibration. It also has to follow the fore-aft axis of the car. I compared results of several runs with my old gtech pro and while I don't believe either device is scientifically accurate, the results for both a comparable, consistent, and accurate enough for practical use to compare the effects of mods and for basic sh1ts and giggles.Hopefully, some developer will take this to another level and make a version exclusive to the iPhone 3G utilizing its built-in GPS in conjunction with the 3-axis accelerometers to log on-track turn-by-turn telemetry for analysis of your driving as mapped around a track. That would be sick! Fully functional telemetry from your phone. And because it has wifi and 3G, perhaps even the possibility of transmitting telemetry data near-real-time to a web-based server for immediate analysis by someone in the paddock.

Any of you who have it/bought it, let me know if yours calibrates. I get to the 3rd calibration point, where you hold the ipod upside down, and it won't calibrate. It runs through the first two points easily. I emailed the company's support line last night, but haven't heard anything yet.

Another cool thing that would of course be highly controversial is time-attack on a given pre-determined pre-mapped course on the street. Then, your phone could send the results to a server and compare against others. Never in any high traffic or residential area, of course, coutry roads only. It would like a real-time, real-life video game. But the law enforcement community would have a field day with that. But I'll bet you could still find a cult following for it. Apple probably would not allow it in the store though, unless you made it a trojan horse function in a more politically correct app. |
