m4 test drive

Finally got a chance yesterday to take a pretty long test drive in the new m4. Route included a twisty section in the snoqualamie falls area and some freeway and city probably 20 miles maybe more. I think some of the complaints about it may be unwarranted at this point and found i liked the overall car more than i had expected. The car had a lot of the same character as my e90 did and felt like an m3 to me. This particular car had akra, brembo, kw clubsports and bfg rivals so may have had something to do with it also.

Active sound didnt bother me and wasnt noticable to me really at all. Heard the car while following as well as inside while driving and both sounded fairly good. Little bit farty but reminds me of my e46 which isnt a bad thing just doesnt sound like the s65. It makes different noises but they seemed pleasing enough to me. The power felt fairly linear and not nearly as laggy as i had expected. There probably is some but when kept in the upper rpms like a track situation there isnt going to be lag, that will most likely only rear its head on the street. Loved the rev matching as im a terrible at heal toe. Car looks wider, longer and lower. The exterior looks are what has grown on me the least but did like the interior and the seats. Steering felt good but overly stiff in anything but comfort mode. Couldnt tell how edc compared as the car had clubsports.

One thing i will say is they should have seperated out some of the settings so you can have them all as you want not grouped. Rev matching only happens in sport throttle setting but not the other 2 setting which didnt make sense. seems to me i should be able to drive in eco, have rev matching and anti lag if i want which wont happen.

Thanks to WootWoot. Congrats on the new job and move.

Sounds like something that could be eventually coded or perhaps in newer models.

good review. The F80 looks fantastic though, and I prefer the design over the E90.

Luckily there weren't any curbs to clip when you test drove it.

Thanks for the review, glad you like it. I really need to test the manual out. I thought auto rev matching was active in normal/sport and bypassed only in Sport+. Maybe I've got it backwards?

It does have some of the e46 rasp, not as metallic though which I loved. Cold start and idle are a buzz kill for me on the f8x.

There were curbs just didn't go dukes of hazard style, I did pass a cop doing 60 in 35 and was a bit worried.

so how was the rev match in Sport mode? Did it feel weird? I think I wouldn't mind having that feature no any MT car. It'll allow you to drive smoother and faster easier

i did note that it is now carbon fiber so may be easier for occupants to kick their way out.

but b/c carbon fiber is essentially plastic, is it easier to clean up split fluids than the old synthetic felt material?

I'm pretty sure the rev match works in normal and sport, but is disabled in sport plus.

Good review of the car. I had similar thoughts after driving a f80.
