Does anyone know of a reputable shop in Houston that has experience replacing Rod Bearings for the s65 engine?

ABR Houston is really good, kinda pricey but if you want it done right... take it to ABR. They did my bearing replacement on my M3 and no problems and I do a track or drift event once a month. VAC coated bearings with ARP rod bolts.

I'm always puzzled by people specifying that they want recommendations for a "reputable" something or other. With the possible exception of those running setups that won't pass smog, has anyone ever asked for a recommendation to a shady outfit?

I do not think anybody has asked for a shady shop but people recommend them all the time. How should one ask for a "reputable" shop?

Because they think those shops are good.
An example in Houston.. Facebook group called Eurotic of Houston had a guy named Daniel Penny, who started a car business even though he wasn't ASE certified/licensed/etc. Quite a few people went to him, thought he did good work, and recommended him. Maybe a year later, everyone learns that his work is shit, and he screwed people out of thousands of dollars. Then he disappears. I actually ordered quite a few car parts through him and his ECS Tuning dealer account. He had some kind of fancy lock to his shop that could be unlocked using a smartphone, and he let me pick up my parts afterhours using the smartphone app. Good way to build customer trust? I'm glad I didn't go to him and get screwed on car work. There's another guy who was recommended by a lot of people in Houston for headlight work, but eventually it was revealed that he did shitty work. |

^ Ok, but that's not knowingly recommending a shady shop; that's recommending a shop that you genuinely thought was good at the time and that you later learned wasn't. It's not like anyone who recommended those shops only did so because the person asking didn't specifically say they only wanted a reputable shop.
