E92 excessive wind noise from windows

Hi Guys,

Has anyone else run into this issue? I have some crazy wind noise/leak from the top of both windows (see pic). It's worse as the speed goes up and now it's gotten to the point where it's unbearable at anything about 85 mph. Windows don't seem out of adjustment (but they still may need it) so I'm wondering if the seals need to be replaced. If you've had this issue, what have you done to help it?

Are you sure the "auto up/down" function on the window is working upon opening and closing the door?

That gap looks a little large, though a close-up shot would help confirm. When you have the window rolled all the way up, does it drop a tiny bit when you open the door and raise back up when you close it? If not, there's an auto-up/down recalibration process described in the manual (imagine that! ) that might help the window go back up all the way. I've seen this issue happen if you code the car while the door is open and thus the window is slightly lowered; when the module resets, that lowered position becomes the top position until you do a recalibration.

I think the "gap" in the photo is an illusion of the shadow cast by the window molding. I've had the same problem in my car and have made it a little better by softening the rubber trim using rubber trim spray. The rubber weatherstripping becomes dry and less flexible over time and does not seal as well anymore, thus the wind noise. Maybe try a little rubber trim softening product?

Same issue here. Only notice it with the stereo off and on the freeway but there is clearly some sort of leak in the trim where the window meets the car.

I've had a look at the rubber trim and I think it's weak for such a good car. I've ended up putting a small, round rubber hose (for gardening) in the window rubber trim (there's a 1cm gap), and that helps a bit by pushing the trim closer to the glass.

I think the problem is that it's such a large glass area that there is vibration and/or gaps at the apex near the top of the door towards the rear.

I had a similar issue. At higher speeds, excessive wind noise coming from driver side window. Rubber window trim replaced by circle bmw. Great team, great work. Problem solved.

This is strange, I have an old 07 335i w/178kms and even at speeds above 200km/hr there is no loud wind noise coming from the windows... TBH this is the first I've ever heard of this being an issue??

Yeah, I've had this also. At normal speeds, it seals ok, but at higher speeds the air flow starts sucking the windows out a little so it loses seal. One small advantage the E90 has over the E92.

this is the first thing i thought about. there may be a malfunction with whatever module controls the windows going down about 1/4" when you open the door. maybe the op's got stuck in the down position or something.

If you guys are not conditioning the rubber seals periodically, they will squeak and harden which increases wind noise. There's tons of products that will work for it such as the Einszett Gummi Pfeldge (sp?) and even the cheap Honda Shin-Etsu convertible top grease.
