wow, i have been suspecting many american drivers who like cars but don't know anything about german cars are misjudging what they see and this confirms it.

Everytime some dude in a Ford sedan or Dodge sedan driver provocatively tailgates me, i am quite sure he is thinking the quad pipe on the m3 is fake and the engine is a stroker kit, transplant or riced by some underground garage when it's all factory stock !
I bet 80% of people grossly underestimate an m3, they have no clue whatsoever what they're looking at and they think you're flaunting some fake shit with customized body parts when it's all hard gold that's about to blow in their face.
The e92 m3 might be the biggest factory stealth sleeper car on the road. Sometimes i rev downshift that engine at an intersection and i swear some people immediately dismiss the m3 and keep looking around for the ferrari that isn't there.
Time to increase my m3 visibility. being a sleeper car is sometimes missing all the credits.

Ha! I think that's the same exact reason I got the Mustang comment. It's actually happened to me a couple of times.

One time, I was leaving a cousin's birthday party when I found a dog randomly walking the street. I opened my door and the (tiny) dog jumped right in my lap. I drove around a bit to see if I could find the owner. Low and behold, there was a woman walking just a couple of blocks down. I actually passed her as I was leaving. I asked her if she'd lost her dog and she said yes, so I opened my door and the dog hopped out. Great!

A week or two later, I'm talking to my cousin and she tells me that the lady has been telling everyone in the neighborhood that some guy in a black Mustang tried to steal her dog!

1) It's an M3, not a Mustang... dammit.

2) It's Interlagos Blue, not black... dammit.

Doesn't help that I was kind of getting on it as I left the neighborhood. She probably thought I was the getaway driver.

So I was taking some co-workers out to lunch today. One of them, our intern, kept commenting on how much power the M3 had. I began to explain that the M3 is basically BMW's street legal race car (he is from a small town in China...so I naively assumed he was not familiar with the ///M brand.)

-I just heard you coming and i thought it's a V12. I know some of those M BMW have V engines. Sounds really good.

-The M6 used to have a V10. They don't make cars like that anymore. They're all muted sound turbo now."

Upon leaving i revved it like a maniac for 5 seconds to let them enjoy. Got all thumbs up and frozen smile faces on 3 guys. I'm sure that sound got imprinted in their mind and the smiles on their face.

Last weekend I gave the M3 a full wash and wheel + tires detail. I got a thumbs up at a red light stop from an infinity driver. He asked me if it's the 2015 M3. I said no it has a V8 (thanks for that ) I revved it a couple of times to reward his compliment, his jaw dropped with a smile frozen on his face.

Anyway, so today I parked in one of those 5 stories buildings ground level garage. It's not underground, still gets some partial daylight but it's a little dark. I was about to leave my car when what looked to me like a purring mustang came and parked a few spots away on the other side. A middle aged lady came out, noticed my car and saw me then looked right in my direction pointed at her car and said: " This is your next car up ". I laughed and replied " No way ! this is YOUR next car up. This is the better car trust me" pointing to the M. Thinking she probably didn't know much about cars. She said "wow !" and walked away.

Later when i came back from lunch i took a closer look at the "mustang".
Well , it wasn't a mustang at all, turns out if was a $235,000 Bentley new Continental GT V8 S (i looked it up online later). 521 HP, 506 lb.ft.

Interior made with absolutely stunning materials. Completely outclassing any interior by BMW/Audi/MB.
0-60 4.5 sec it's almost as fast as an E92 M3 but of course it's not trying to be a track car.
She must have thought i am a jerk. I feel like a tool for telling her the m3 was the "better" car, not when you can buy almost 4 new M3's with that car ! Clearly my reply was inappropriate

But to my defense, I only saw the back of the car initially, from that angle it looks like an typical american muscle car of sort.

Yesterday when I was going through the Chick-fil-A drive thru the girls are outside taking orders. The young girl that took my order asked me is that a real carbon fiber top or did you do that by yourself, of course I said this is a real factory issued carbon fiber top. She then ask if she could touch, i said sure no problem. I was very impressed that she knew what carbon fiber is, she was probably 19 years old. She also knew that it would lighten the weight of the vehicle so we could go faster.

Nothing too crazy, there are so many BMW 3/5/6/7 series around here nobody notices anything different. A few thumbs up here and there.

My girlfriend likes the seatbelt handler. Every time she gets in she goes "thank you Winston".

On another note,
I had a Lotus Elise for a bit years back, and that got attention everywhere. From dudes weighing 300+ wanting to sit in it(they couldn't get in/out) to my dentist wanting a ride around the block, then propositioning me to go to Mexico with her(she is gross, we didn't)

While I happen to like the sound of the LS1 V8, the LS1 and S65 couldn't sound more different despite both being V8's. The M3 sounds much more like a Ferrari V8 than it does like a small block Detroit V8. The German car with the Detroit V8 sound is the MB AMG V8. It sounds sweet too.

My car may as well be invisible when I'm around - nobody seems to give it a second look, but several times a week I return to my parking spot to see hand (and presumably forehead) smudges on the driver door glass. I'm not sure if they just want to see what kind of transmission it has or if they are hoping l left my phone on the seat. Either way I consider it a "funny compliment."
