911 model designation

Just curious as to the methodology behind the 911 model designations.
964 to 993 to 996 to 997 then 991
Why jump back down?

you don't have to. just look at every 911 for the last 50 years, and you will get the idea of what the "new" one will look like

My guess is that they realized they were going to hit 1,000 too soon and decided to revert to a smaller number.

That's what I thought, but it seemed too silly. What moron decided to start that high in the first place?

Must be something internal that they did. The Cayman went from 987 to 981, the last number must mean something.

I think it's just meant to be an internal product code. ie., E46 -> E90 -> F30

I know its an internal product code, but usually they follow some type of logic. BMW is now follow the alphabet. Now if they go from the G platforms upcoming to C designated codes, we'll all wonder why.

Porsche went backwards this time.

What matters most is that while the numbers went backwards the cars themselves jumped so far ahead of everything (and they were already ahead) in the industry that even though the 991 has been out for several years they are still scratching their heads on how to compete with it in any variation.

Really? Because whenever they have track comparisons of 911 with Vettes or GT-R, the Beetle is usually staring into the taillights of the other cars

Umm...no.

When the 991C4S went up against the Stingray and F12 for best drivers car, which car was picked as the winner?

In Best drivers car 2014, which ranked highest the turbo S or GTR?

How many times has the vette or GTR won best drivers car or EVO car of the year, or best performance car? How many times has the 911 won?

Should I go into pro racing especially ALMS where porsche has utterly dominated Chevy in the GT/GT2 class for the ~15 years it was around?

That list could go on and on but you get the picture.

Please stop. You're making me look bad.

The fanboyism of those in the Porsche camp is without question stronger than any other circle I'm involved in.

And that explains why out of the 20 fastest ever street cars on the Nurburgring, only 3 are made in Germany

He said best. Not fastest. I'm not a porsche fanboy. I drive M's. But you're argument is lacking.

The longest standing record for the Ring has been held by a Porsche 356.
Of the 85 times listed in Wikipedia for laps under 8 mins, 22 of them are Porsche times. And I know there are a few more since the new cayenne turbo has set a record with a 7:59 time. First Production SUV to lap in under 8 mins and absolutely crushes the previous Range Rover record of 8:14.

And just for comparison sake:

Of those 85,

Ferrari - 6
Chevy - 10
BMW - 3 but there are a few more not listed
Mercedes - 3 but again a few more not listed

Overall, again, the point is Porsche has been winning and winning and utterly dominating in any aspect for so long and so consistently they make the Yankees look bad.
