Engine Sound After 1200 Mile Service
Hey Everyone,
Had the 1200 mile service done on my 2013 E92 M3 DCT Coupe today. For the most part, I'd say the process and service was fairly solid. I got my car serviced at Competition BMW in Smithtown, Long Island. I originally made my appointment for Oct 10th a week in advance but realized on the 6th that I would need the service done sooner since I was quickly approaching 1200 miles. There was no hassel when changing to an earlier date. I decided to bring it there myself and wait. The SA immediately said, "I guess you don't want us to wash it." The car was just washed two days before. I was told that it would take two hours and it took exactly that. It was returned to me with 2 additional miles on it so I just made sure that all the tires still had the same amount of tread left on them...and they did so I wasn't too concerned about that. . Everything on the 1200 mile check list was taken care of except for the microfilter. - Castrol Synthetic Oil (10 quarts it appears, iDrive reports oil directly on the Max line) - Oil filter changed - Rear Differential fluid changed - Checked out with a scope - Topped off windshield wiper fluid - Final-Drive Gear Ratio O1 (not sure what this was) I have two questions. First, I have noticed that the engine sounds a bit different. The growl seems more raw, deeper, and agressive. Is this a side effect of having the 1200 mile service done? Is the oil still making its way through the engine? Is this what the beast truly sounds like? . Secondly, what is the "Final-Drive Gear Ratio O1" line item? I will ask the dealer but I was wondering if anyone here knew. |

Your car sounds the same. There is nothing that is done during a service that would affect the sound.

Any engine sound changes are in your head from post-break-in excitement, or the result of spending more time above the break-in RPM limit. And I have to agree with the above poster, you actually checked your tread depth despite there being only 2 extra miles on your car, seriously? Getting measurable tread depth changes in 2 miles would have required either you to have a micrometer or them to be driving your car for the entire 2 miles like that scene in Breaking Bad with the Challenger.

I'm surprised you went there after hearing the stories They're my "local" dealer but I went out to Rallye in Westbury to buy my car and for service the last two times. After a somewhat disappointing service experience there a few weeks ago though I'm considering trying somewhere else.

OP, your car most likely sounds the same after the dealer visit but it definitely has changed since the day you bought it (exhaust breaks in)
