"Quit your eye-rolling. GM built a new eight-speed automatic for the Corvette Z06 in-house. The transmission actually delivers shifts that are quicker than those served up by the mighty PDK in the Porsche 911. Why an automatic and not a dual-clutch transmission? GM wanted to maintain cylinder deactivation on the LT4, and a traditional torque converter helps dampen the vibrations that accompany the transitions between V8 and V4 mode."
For those of you asking WHY not DCT.

And the hits keep on coming. Did you miss the part where it said it was QUICKER than a PDK?!??!
At least they OFFER a manual trans! And the rev match can be turned off BTW.

MPG is a concern when you spank it TO THE TRACK-AT THE TRACK-BACK HOME FROM THE TRACK.

Not everyone trailer's their ZO6's to tracks.

Interesting. I'm surprised that's the reason though, considering that cylinder deactivation works on the manual transmission version. I'm no DCT expert, but I'd be surprised if the vibrations were worse on a DCT than a full-on manual. Or maybe they just figure manual transmission drivers are more accustomed to and tolerant of vibrations due to (gear) transitions.

Whatever, this is a brand-new transmission, so we'll just have to see how it behaves. If GM figured out how to make a slushbox as fun in all ways as a DCT, then more power to them. If not, then let's wait until we know that for a fact rather than writing it off a year before it arrives.

Not being a DCT fan myself if it shifts faster isn't it better? What makes the DCT so fun that I don't get? I really am not trying to troll I thought people just liked DCT because of how fast it shifted.

You guys hurt my feelns maken fun of me for maken fun of there crappy trans, lol just playn i dont have feelns.

But for real DCT is great, one of my favorite things about the DCT(besides its #1 Trans ever and shifts fast as ah Mug) is that Unlike a true Auto you Dont have to hold the brake when you stop, seems silly but its a big deal, although if you on a hill it will roll.

Interesting. I have never driven a true automatic but holding the brake is something I thought you had to do in a DCT. Shows you how long it held my attention.

Yeah I guess my F150 and my short stint in an IS-F. Other than that every car I have ever owned was manual. I drive DCT on my Xbox.

Bmw's dct is like this but Porsches pdk (double clutch) isn't and the brake needs to be held. The C7 Z06 is bad ass though and I would love to pick one up one day.

I think that's a large part of the fun factor of DCT (I'm ignoring the practicality arguments for DCT since they're not important in this context), but I made the "as fun as DCT" comment despite the claimed shift times purely because other people were complaining that the Z06 would be auto rather than DCT because "slushboxes feel numb", which I don't think is a fair assessment of a trans that isn't out yet. We also need to see how fast the AVERAGE shift times are; GM claims that their trans is "up to 8/100ths faster than PDK", but that doesn't mean it's ALWAYS faster. Still, I'm sure it will be sweet -- though I'm also pretty sure I'd still want it in manual myself, having had the chance to compare 6MT and DCT M3s.

DCTs by their design do not require you to hold the brake when you're stopped; it's just like sitting in Neutral in a manual transmission. However, some of them are programmed via software to creep forward like an auto trans by slipping first gear (again, just like you might in a manual). On the M3 DCT, you can start creeping by lightly touching the gas, and then it will continue going forward slowly without you having to keep your foot on the throttle. But when you first come to a stop it will stay there even with your foot off the brake.

4-5 years from now I'll either be driving this or still be driving my current M3. I just don't expect to be tempted by the new M3/4 for various reasons, and I don't think anything else is going to come out in the next 4 years that would appeal to me more than this thing. Then again, I really do love my E92 and I'm in no hurry at all to get rid of it.

The ONLY way I'd end up with something other than a Z06 or my current M3 by then would be if my life situation changed such that a two-seater just wasn't going to work or I somehow had enough cash to consider a 991 GT3. But I don't anticipate either of those happening, and honestly even if I COULD buy a 991 GT3, I'm not actually sure that I WOULD based on what I'm seeing here. Can't wait until reviews come out!

Way to go GM! Despite all the regulatory and environmental concerns levied against carmakers these days, I think this truly is one of the great times in history to be a car enthusiast.

I say this as an avid BMW fan, and not as a troll, but I think I would be embarrassed if I was BMW right now. Seriously, how can one even consider an M4 with this thing as an option? The M3 for practicality maybe, but not the M4.

Well the M4 does have rear seats, which I have almost never used on my E92, but they're one of those things that might be tough to NEVER have. Still, for a car like the new Z06 I think any potential inconvenience or extra effort would be totally worth the benefits. And besides, if I ever need rear seats, I'm married to someone who a car thusly equipped!

But I totally know what you mean. Even the C7 Z51 would probably give the new M3/4 a run for its money thanks to its lower weight.
