Given your situation i.e. no need of space or practicality I would keep the 997.2S without hesitation. Agreed however that the tech aspect of the M3 is better.

I just traded in my 997s.1 last year for the e93 Love the DCT and love the convertible aspect, but nothing (and I mean nothing ) handles like a p-car plus, the 911 has, at least to me, so much more eyeball appeal than any m3 ever will. for me, it was an issue of practicality, as my car is a DD plus, have two young kids, and needed a usable backseat if you are single, keep the porsche

In the end follow your heart and be careful about that decision ... last year I sold my 2002 M3 and I still regret that I did it.

I think you entered the wrong door, the Honda forum is 5 doors down the hallway
I'm thinking you never had the pleasure to take a M3 for a spin ...

Drop the 997 and keep the M.
I actually seen a Carerra S on the way to work today and I literally thought "I would so much rather have this car then that Prosche". I just think that pre-2012 Carerras are starting to look really dated (except for the turbo and higher). IMO, I also think that when you see a guy in a P car that is on the lower end of the model range it just says "look, I can afford to drive a Porshe". When you see a guy in an M car I think it says "I have class and style, not just money. I know what I am driving, do you?". Of course that is just my opinion and I am sure many of you wont agree but that is just my 2 cents. If I got tired of my M3 and HAD to drive something else, the new Carerra would be high on my list. But as for right now if I had to choose, I would keep the M! My opinion might also be skewed by the fact that I very rarely see P cars that are actually clean. That just makes me kinda lose respect for the driver. So, what the hell do I know... That being said, the new 2012 Carerra is

I say keep the Porsche...I would have bought one if the price difference beween the M and the 997S wasn't so big.
I am gonna laugh if the poll comes out even...it's pretty close now

I'm not sure asking a bunch of strangers who largely own one of the two cars you have for their opinion is the best way to go about this. There is no right or wrong answer here - you have to go with your preferences, needs and gut. What does it matter what a bunch of M3 drivers think? Also, are you asking this question on Rennlist or 6Speedonline? I'm guessing you will get 95% in favor of the 997s on those boards while you are getting more like 50-60% in favor of the M3 here. If you really wanted the average opinion of 50 M3 and 50 997 owners, I bet it would come out quite strongly in favor of the 997.
...and since you are asking, I too have both and would go the opposite way from Pinhead. I'd hate to have to give one up but if I had to ditch one it would be the M3. I really enjoy it but the 997S is more special to me. Which brings us back to the point that this whole thing is incredibly subjective and you need to make up your own mind. |

Each person is different, but I could never justify spending what Porsche asks for a car with such spartan and basic interior; even the cheapest Hyundai is better equipped. And if I was to own a pre-2012 P-car, it'd be the a$$-ugly Cayman S. I never warmed up to the 911 handling myself. But yes, it's better looking than both the Cayman and M3 IMO. And Porsche has the best driving experience (with adaptive seats and sport steering wheel), but suspension is harsher than my wife would tolerate even with PASM, so to me the M3 is far superior overall than a current 911, even with its truckish driving position. And at least you have 2 more years of the M3 not looking old. The 911 already is. And I'm with the OP with the GT3; why the hell even consider that car if not for mostly track duty? It's downright brutal on the streets. I'd always drive by myself on that thing. The 430 feels like a minivan by comparison.
Having said the above, I'm curious about the new 991 (and new Cayman S). For one, the interior is finally up to the asking price. And very happy to see a manufacturer actually IMPROVE a manual transmission (now a 7-speed). If only Porsche dropped the FOUR WHEEL strut suspension (and M3 the front one) . Good day gang. |

You've got enough green to drop $80-90k on the 997 without "thinking it through". Whatever. The 997.2 is a much better car - and much more expensive. The M3 is fun and much more practical. If you're single with no obligations and now have $160k worth of cars, I couldn't care less what you do.

Assuming you can only keep one and cannot consolidate them both and get a new car, keep the porsche. I'll admit it, the m3 does get boring after a while, it just doesn't feel as fast as the carrera unless the RPMs are way high, which is not ideal for street driving. The porsche offers speed on demand more than the M3 does. Let's not forget the porsche's superior handling and gearbox as well.
