Replacement engine questions
Didn't get a very firm answer at the dealership, so I thought I'd ask here.
If your engine is replaced under warranty (I assume a remanufactured engine), does a break-in period + 1200 service still apply? Also, what goes into remanufacturing an engine... is it good as new? Any concerns with how miles odometer mileage is reported in the future? thanks! |

break in period applies. 1200 mile service applies. should be covered by dealer if the motor was covered.
its as good as new. keep track of miles on the engine vs odo. simple as pie. |

I would never consider a reman as "good as new". It's a used core that's been freshened up to factory specs with new parts.

QC is not in question in my mind. It's more the fact that it was previously used and not brand new.

When I had my accident, I got a new engine from Germany. This was covered under my insurance so it may be different under warranty. Although, I would push to get a new engine. And yes, break in was required.

Reman usually consists of new rings, bearings pistons, seals and gaskets. Block and head are inspected, and machined back to specs. Crankshaft and camshafts are reused after machine work. No I would not consider it new, but it would perform just like new.

I'd take a reman engine in a heartbeat over the dealer rebuilding it.

Dude, I have some news for you that may blow your mind and/or bring you to tears. That engine under your hood? It's used too. So what? As long as the block is solid and hasn't been abused, used is perfectly fine.
And yes OP, it states this in the manual (maybe M3 Supplement) that whenever components that require break-in are replaced, you need to perform the break-in again. So you should follow the specified break-ins every time you replace your tires and brakes too.

Also, there is no way for anyone to know whether a block was abused or not. You could be getting someone's blown s/c block for all you know. Just cause it passes a list of tolerances, doesn't mean it was babied. |

Yes, I agree that there are degrees of used, and at that point I guess it's up to BMW's engineers to develop solid tests and tolerances -- but unless someone here happens to know what those are and is qualified to cast an opinion on them, that's a pretty moot point.

I'm sure BMW provides new replacement engines when it first comes out. As time goes and BMW builds a stock of ruined engines, they become remans.
If I had to replace an engine...I'd go with BMW. New or reman.

I agree although I believe there probably aren't too many options out there in the first place.

Once its machined its equivalent to new. The block is actually the least worry free component of an engine build. Its either solid or it isn't. |
