Macht Schnell Filter Installed
Just a quick review...
I got the Macht Schnell High Performance Air Filter installed and it is great. The fitment is perfect and the part is of great quality. The car has better throttle response, better sound, and it really feels like the engine is breathing better. I have no regrets on this purchase.

It'd be great if one or both of you guys went to a dyno to see what kind of gains you really got. Most of us are seeing around 6 hp.

I had E36M3, E46M3 (and 08 E92 335i) before. Hey join the San Diego thread in California forum. We all hang out in the SD forum while at work (and meet + eat every other week).

Wow, looks like you have had your share of cars. Ya, I miss the old E36 sometimes. I tried looking for the SD Forum, but could not find it. Point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I have only read good reviews from users on this one so I also got one and incidentally I tried to fit it in today.
The stock filter fits really tightly into the air box, whereby its 2 lower corners have almost zero tolerance from the walls of the airbox. I found out that the MS filter is slightly (meaning 1cm or so) thicker in breadth, therefore I could not install it achieving a perfect fit like the OEM filter. The OEM filter achieves perfect fit onto the engine intake duct by being pushed onto it with a pushrod tentioner. When it is nicely in place, it clears the walls of the air box by a very very small tiny bit. Because the MS filter is a bit thicker (in the breadth dimension) and also not as rigid as the OEM filter (which is strengthened by plastic in the inside), I was not able to fit it in without it being slightly distorted. This distortion was IMO enough to not be able to achieve a perfect fit, thus leaving a small gap between the filter and the engine air intake duct. This means that the engine would potentially suck some air from the airbox directly - not through the filter. I was persistantly trying to fit it in in a way to achieve perfect fit onto the engine intake duct but could not. Eventually I decided to put the OEM filter back in as I did not want to sleep with the idea that the engine could suck even a bit of air straight from the airbox (there is a lot of dust where I live and by the way I found a large leaf and other debris on the OEM filter when I opened the air box!). I am really surprised about this since whover got it has posted that they have installed it nicely and were happy. I couldn't. I am a handy guy so I doubt I do not have the skils for such a simple install. Any ideas guys? |

You might need this since you are listed from Athens, Greece and have a Euro Spec M3. Your Euro OEM filter is different than the US OEM one. I believe the MS filter was built for US Spec cars.
http://www.europeanautosource.com/pr...oducts_id=2369 I was concerned about the rigidity differences from stock and MS, but after comparing the two, I did not feel it was an issue anymore. I did not have any fitment issues with no gaps as I double checked this during install.

We haven't had a chance to dyno the GruppeM kit, however the stock airbox flows very well.

I installed mine yesterday.
I had an opportunity to pick up about 200 miles used filter for 70 shipped so I couldn't resist it. Honestly, I didn't expect anything different but oh man- the filter adds really nice sound when you go over 4k rpm. Lovin it. (I'm still in the 1200 break-in period so can't push it yet).

congrats! Engine def. sounds so much better when you push it.
BTW does anyone know how many miles the air filter can run before we need to re-oil it?
