Wheel vibration

at 80 mph I feel a little shake in the steering wheel. dealer took a drive, said it could be flat spots in the tires? he suggested I start with a wheel balance. Is this the best first step?

Wheel vibration can be caused by a number of things but the dealer is right, I would start with a wheel balance and to check if you have bent any of the rims slightly. Are you running spacers? M3's seem to be very sensitive to spacers.

I have a bit of vibration over certain patches of freeway even after just getting new tires on all four corners, a new alignment, and new front wheel bearings. If you have it everywhere at those speeds though, the wheel weights probably aren't set up correctly. Wheel bearings are another possibility, and they can be checked on a lift with a mechanic's stethoscope.

For starters, check to make sure your wheel studs are on tight.. Seen this one before

I had pretty bad shake one of my wheels was bent!

Get the road force balanced you'll see if they're bent.

Road force balance, wheel alignment, properly torque lugs. If this doesn't solve it, the issue should be escalated.
