BMW to recall all S65s for bearing issues

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1/4/2015 by BMW AG, Munich, Germany

BMW AG is recalling all S65 engines that were installed in the E90/92/93 M3s from the years 2007-2013. The recall is being issued due to improper rod bearing clearance specifications. This recall covers all markets.

BMW’s Head of Sales Pauline Yorlegg and Erich Motorenfailen issued the following statment on the matter:
"The S65 is a wonderful engine that has a direct lineage from the ultra successful F1 program from the early 2000s. The V10 engine that was placed in the Williams BMW F1 team and later the BMW factory F1 team was
the predecessor to the BMW E60 M5 S85 V10 and later the M3 S65 V8 engines. As we know, the F1 engine was designed to last approximately one weekend or about 500 kilometers.

Yorlegg and Motorenfailen went on to say:
"The engineers that made the road going derivatives of the F1 engine were tasked to increase the engine longevity of the motor. They did a fantastic job as some of these engines have survived well over 150,000
kilometers. However, the design parameters were indended for these engines to last only 81,000 kilometers before failure. This figure was derived as the United States is the largest M car market in the world and their warranty is for 50,000 miles (80,500 kilometers). It has been shown that bearing wear has been accelerated over other BMW model's engines, but the failure rate has not met BMW's design targets. It was intended for every E90/92/93 owner to buy a brand new S65 before 100,000 kilometers so BMW could use the profits to build more X class SAV vehicles at the Spartanburg plant in the US to create greater profits for the shareholders."

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail of the following recall procedures:
The owner will need to bring their affected vehicle to their nearest BMW dealer for new rod bearings. A factory certified BMW technician will replace all the bearings in the car with thicker bearings at no charge to the customer.

The results of this recall will accelerate bearing wear to a point that BMW is confident that all S65 engines will need a factory replacement engine just after the warranty period expires.

This press release is in no way affiliated with BMW AG or any of the BMW group of companies. BMW is a registered trademark of BMW AG. The above story is in direct relation to date of publication (European style of writing month and year- 1/4 = APRIL FOOL'S).

Scheduled my recall appointment with my SA moments ago.

Thanks for the tip, OP. About time they addressed this lingering issue.

Oh man.. That would be too awesome.

Would be more believable if it didn't say that the recall involved installing thicker bearings
