So you think an M3 is comparable to FBO n54 335
After a month with my M3..my answer NO>>>!!!
I have come to find that all these fanatics (including me) claiming the FBO 335 is faster/better than an M3 have not a clue..after enuff time w/ both cars...IMO NO WAY!!.. I honestly dont know how someone can say with a straight face that the M is not the better car. Even completely stock this M3 (on the streets) has shown me things..that I could never have experienced on my former 335i.. BACKGROUND: I had an FBO n54 335i..and i thought it was a fanastic car..but the M3 has shown me another level..now that I have gotten comfortable with it..I can honestly say the M3 is so the better car .totally eclipsing the former sister car...The M3 is just balls out a car that can take punishment and continue to deliver results,.. I never thought I would be saying this but to quote scripture John 9:25 Whereas once I was blind, but now I see. Last edited by tibra1; 01-15-2012 at 08:23 PM.. |

Hope this thread will shed light on the rest of the world.
What are the main differences? I'm assuming handling and powerband are for certain. |

I was only getting a couple mpg better in my 335, so don't hate too much on the M3. Its how I drive, not what I drive
+1 to the OP. I just don't get it. The torque complaint is just rediculous IMHO. Figuring that you get more torque at the wheels because of the lower final drive ratio, and the fact taht you are at higher rpms, thus getting more horsepower ( torque * rpm / 5280 ), the below formula helps convert M3 power to 335i power at a given speed in a given gear... M3 torque * lower gear ratio mechanical advantage * benifit of higher rpm = 335i equivalent torque (kind of) 295 * ( 3.85 / 3.08 ) * ( 3.85 / 3.08 ) = 368.75 * ( 3.85 / 3.08 ) = 460-ish Normally you can't really count the second ratio multiplier, if it is a same car diff swap, because you'll run into redline faster, so won't be able to be in teh same gear at teh same speed, but with our MUCH higher redline, it works out. So no, we won't be able to match the torque at 3000 rpm in second, but we will be putting similar power down at 45 mph in 2nd, to complete the analogy. This is because of the mechanical advantage of the lower gearing (approx. 25%) and the higher rpms at a given speed (also approx. 25%) I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I could be off on some of my calc's, but the fundamental approach is correct.

They're different cars for sure. The 335 is better for the typical driver, IMO, since they won't notice the subtle but significant differences in how the two cars are different. The low end torque is really nice in the 335 when your just driving around town. But the continuous pull of the //M is amazing at the track. .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

A member here (Hotrod) has a jb4,meth 335i and runs low 11's with stock fmic, downpipes, intake, diff.
I know the M3 isn't designed for the dragstrip but sometimes you wanna go play with the other cars like the z06,c6.3 AMG, Boss302 LS, CTS V etc. At the strip. |

I believe Hotrod is also spay NO2 for his low 11 runs (also lightening/track tires?!?!), either way, he is a special dude that manages exceptional times for his investment in his cars. I'd love to see what he would do with an M3. Maybe wouldn't waste his time with an NA car?

The other thing thing I misss about the 335i,is mpg although in town I had pretty much the same mpg as the M,on the hghwy you can see 33mpg with the 335i vs maybe 24mpg with the M3.

I'm the same
But, I will admit that the N54 is a better DD engine than the S65 I tend to prefer DDing my Z4 over my M3 due to the instant availability of the low end torque Been driving a modded N55 135i DCT...and I have to admit, I love the endless low end power. Overall, I prefer my M3. But you can't deny the DD aspect of the N54 and N55, especially when moded (though my Z4 is stock, my previous 335i was FBO)

Here you go..so the car came with the following mods..surprising the guy who had it before didnt part these out..but hey Im def not complaining..
- OEM BMW CF Mirror Covers - OEM BMW CF Front Bumper Splitters - Gloss Black Kidney Grills - Matte Black Carbon Fiber M3 Fender Grilles - Marker Light Covers - Lux Angel Eyes (Light Blue) - Macht Schnell Wheel Spacers (10mm Rear 15mm Front) Only remaining mods I plan to do is the OEM Exhaust Mod, AFE Air Filter, some different wheels (looking at VMR v710s) and possibly a CF rear diffuser to round out the CF look on the car Last edited by tibra1; 01-16-2012 at 07:41 PM.. |

^^ Car looks good. Those carbon splitters are nice on the AW. I'm considering those even though my car will be black.
Oh, and p.s. I love the "one hump" dash but I'm biased.

Those terms contradict each other. For sure, the N54 and N55 have fantastic a fantastic low end, but it ends, and ends rather abruptly compared to the S65. I think the N54/55 are better daily drivers if you're preference is to leave them in gear longer (i.e. surf the wave of torque in 3rd gear), instead of doing more shifting.
