Very nice pics and all!! Thanks. Let me post some pics of how my interior is coming along. As PG said, we all got some personal goodies, mine is the interior among other things.

RS46 Dyno Results - Preliminary

Guys,

Although we have 4 motors completed, and we are finishing up a 5,8 liter V10 this week, we are still playing around with the configuration of all the external components of the RS46. This week we are testing the throttle bodies and the cams.

Just to give you some parameters, an RS46 with no additional components, meaning:

Stock exhaust
Stock Cams
Stock air box
Stock air filter
No EMS
No throttle bodies
No pulleys
91 octane pump gas

you get the concept, just the 4.6 motor with all stock parts, runs around 410 HP at the rear wheels, up from an average of 345 for a stock M3. Here is yesterday's dyno from one of the RS46 motors tested in this configuration. Note that the motor has only 700 miles on it, so we didn't pull to the 8250 RPM rev limit.

A very crude calculation translates this into 485-490 HP at the crank.

From this point forward, we see around 35 RWHP with the exhaust (Tri-Y headers, metal cats, and rear silencers) and EMS. Pulley, air filter and other gadgets will add a little more.

Nice. The RDSport emblem is a nice touch on the front seats.

Did you consider any other options for the harness bar? Full cage? Is it welded in?

wow, those pics look incredible!

so the only difference between the "normal" version and the race version is that the race version has a lower, larger lip?

Did consider full cage but that was a tad too much and would eliminate the us of the rear seats altogether. As it is today, the rear bar is removable in a few minutes time (this was a particular challenge since the base is welded in and reinforced on to the B pillars) so that the rear seats are usable. However, since most of the time I drive alone (or track alone) the bar will stay as it adds rigidity and holds the four point seat belts. If you are interested, you can ask RDSports on how the base of the bar was integrated and secured into the B pillars. Its wonderful work really.

PG, could you please clarify this statement:

Any reason this engine wasn't dyno tested while it was out of the car so you could get accurate flywheel HP readings? Wouldn't it have been easier to test and swap parts before it got put back in the car?

I would guess because engine dyno setups are few and far between.

I would think a company building race engines would have one no? Seems like a basic tool when you do that for a living. Every race engine shop I've been in had one, and even just the small shops did too.

However, there are some ongoing discussions about trying to make it happen.
Oh didn't know they weren't a race shop... I thought RD stood for Racing Dynamics?

Excuse my ignorance on the E9x's electronics, but how much is left in the car after you take out the engine that you need to hook up? Don't most of the sensors come out with the engine? Then all you have to do is take out ECU and you'd need a wiring harness to plug it back together?

From the time and money being spent on this build I have to say I am quite surprised nothing has been dyno tested before the engine got put back in the car. It leaves a lot of guess work. Of course the "guesses" are highly educated ones. But even in your last post about that dyno graph no baseline on this engine even exists. You've just guessed the HP. Totally rebuilding an engine with only a guess what the baseline HP was at the crank. I went to school for building race cars a few years back and even worked in a couple small race engine shops for a bit, everything got run on the dyno. All cylinder head work and intakes were tested on a flow bench too. If you're building this kind of stuff with out these tools you are simply guessing what's going to give you more power.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking bad about this build or RD sport at all. In fact if in a year or two my bank account allows I'll be shipping my car to CA for this conversion also.

So what I'm saying here is that putting this motor on a real dyno would be a huge undertaking; and not as simple as pulling the ECU applying 12V to make it work.
Ahh, this makes sense. I didn't realize it was so difficult to set this motor up on a dyno. Of course if you plan to do a lot of BMW engine work a wise move would probably be to set something permanent up like Dinan did. Honestly most of my race engine work was on small block Chevy's. Doesn't take to much to get them running outside of a car.

I'm well aware this is a good time to make deals with the economy how it is. Unfortunately the economy affects my bank account too so I'm not in the position presently to be making this type of deal But I've been following this build closely and can't wait to see some videos and read your reviews of finished product. No question this is better than any forced induction setup other companies are producing

I´ve considered this alternative and at least from what I could discern found it rather impractical. To begin with, hp even with ECU modification etc... would initially be identical (if not lower) to the V8 stoker but in a heaver package. So, in order to make the V10 an interesting alternative, it would make sense to get a stroker for it as well. A V10 stroker rebuild would cost around $45 grand plus the cost of a V10 base engine and peripherals for at least another $30 grand installed and would produce around 650bhp (full stroker, headers, throttle bodies, etc...) compared to at least 535+ from the V8 stroker. So, these modifications would cost around $75 grand total for 650 bhp but with a slightly heavier and perhaps relatively more unbalanced car. God only knows what other modification may be needed such as transmission etc... but lets leave that out of the equation for now. Still, a nice project to drop that V10 in there http://www.leftlanenews.com/customiz...to-new-m3.html or check out Dinan´s proposal http://www.modifiedle.com/events/arc...event_083.html.
