Aftermarket intake... warranty question

Does putting on an aftermarket intake void the BMW warranty? I tried searching but I couldn't find anything. Then again my search skills are very limited

The answer is no!

As long as you have a filter then no one can void your warranty.

ANYTHING can void your warranty. tech can always claim that your aftermarket filter does not have the same filtering capabilities that the oem filter has, hence letting more unwanted particles into the engine.

if you have to ask this question then MODDING IS NOT FOR YOU.

unfortunately, anytime you mod something, there's always a risk of voiding warranty. no matter how small it is, it is definitely there. personally, i have done quite a few mods to my vehicle but i only go for mods that i am comfortable with. so you'll have to find your comfort level when it comes to mods.

Under the federal statute, a manufacturer, who issues a warranty on your motor vehicle, is prohibited from requiring you to use a particular brand of air filter, oil filter, or other service or maintenance item, unless such item is provided, free of charge, under your warranty or unless the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) waives this prohibition against the manufacturer.

I would read this thread. It's pretty much along the same lines as your question just in a broader sense.

But in short, anything but a BMW approved or OEM spec filter can technically void your warranty. It is a violation of a contractual agreement that we have with BMW.

As noted in many threads and your new vehicle warranty, "alterations" to the vehicle's engineered specifications can void the respective area of the new vehicle warranty impacted by the alteration. An aftermarket intake would most definitely void your powertrain warranty.

It's very simple. If you desire your warranty, don't Mod. If you don't care about losing the respective area of your warranty such as the powertrain, then Mod to your heart's content.

Quote from your new vehicle warranty terms and conditions:

"“Damage which results from negligence,
improper operation of the vehicle, wear and
tear or deterioration due to driving habits or
conditions, improper repair, environmental
influences, flood, accident or fire damage, road
salt corrosion, alteration, installation of
non-genuine BMW accessories, or use of
improper, poor quality or contaminated fuel”

False information stated by technically challenged people in a forum can cost you dearly so when in doubt consult a lawyer regarding your rights and obligations under your new vehicle limited warranty. I do not provide legal advice. I try to help people understand technical subjects so that they can learn to help themselves.

I like the article, but it is incomplete. The contractual agreement with BMW supersides all of that, as stated in that same act.

You are forgetting one thing.....the hassle factor. Even you have a legal right to something, there is the hassle of it all. If your dealership refuses to have a particular repair covered under warranty, do you really want to go through the lengthy and expensive legal battle all while your car sits broken.

If you want to mod, you have to either not care about your warranty or have a good working relationship with your dealer. I have often paid my dealerships in cash (then a little on the side to the mechanics themselves), to actually install some of my big level mods on past cars. I have never been denied any warranty claim ever.
