I like his honesty and brevity. Clearly they have made plans and all is decided.

No M3 till late 2013, that works for me...

Pardon my ignorance here, but isn't 1M still available for ordering from BMW NA? Does that mean they still haven't reached the 740 units? I thought it was rare, sought after, etc?

I think they have a great plan and with the upcoming launch of all these new models they are going to be coming with a crazy arsenal! Frankly I really think the 1M, X5M, and X6M helped stuff some cash in their pockets and this is leading to more innovation and trust from BMW AG to approve projects!

I wish there was some mention of the X5M and its future direction. I would want to know why the X5M was given a standard automatic transmission instead of a DCT, for example.

I thought "M" cars are usually given the most sophisticated transmissions available to BMW, which surprised me when X5M wasn't given DCT, but instead regular automatic.

Production has already stopped for the US (back in October). Total output was 740 units for the US.

That's because it's not an "M" car. It's a big, fat truck with a monster engine and some pretty badges all over it.

As someone who just recently purchased an e92 M3, I am actually very happy about this. More time driving the "current" M3, rather than the "old" model!

"That's because it's not an M3" <<<<--- fixed your post.

X5M is not built to compare against your M3, it's built to compare, and crush, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes GL63 AMG.

Thats an interesting thought, wouldn't that be funny if it was true.

Use the money from the ugly stepchildren to help groom the M breed cars.

The big , fat trucks are actually, in key strategic M markets M's best sellers.
At M they are classified as "Volume Sellers" because they sell in large numbers. In some countries they sell more /X5M's ,X6M's than M3's.
Hence why Audi and Mercedes are fast-tracking similar SAC Concepts.
X5M and X6M even surpassed E90 M3 sales again in 2011, just like 2010.

The X5M and X6M will receive replacements under the (F15) and (F16)
Before that a special edition X6M will appear.

Big sellers do not an M car make, Scott

Though I have no doubt that BMW will continue to crank them and similar M-branded-but-not-really-M cars out as long as people who care more about status than character shell out their newly acquired money for them.

Business is, after all, business. Even if what's best for business means shitting on the tradition and history that got you here in the first place.

Extend that lease and keep enjoying the gem that is the S65 V8. I don't think we're going to see an 8400rpm NA screamer from BMW again.

THANK YOU!!!! Finally someone who remembers how //M was born and what made it what it is now.
