Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels

I have an 04/12 build BMW 320d M Sport Special Edition. I recently scuffed one of the alloy wheels so requested a specialist to repair this. He observed that the wheels were originally diamond cut but had been sanded back to the bare metal, and then lacquered. He also observed that if a wheel needed a major repair requiring a further diamond cut then this wheel would not match the other three as the diamond cut wheel is much brighter. He also noted that some of the lacquer is peeling away.

Whoever has performed the bare metal repair must have know than this was not appropriate for a diamond cut wheel and has done this to save money. As this car is still under warranty do I have a case to make to BMW requiring that the original diamond cut finish is restored?

I don't think your warranty will cover that. There's no manufacturer's defect, that's just a botched wheel repair job.

But the repair job will have been done by BMW hence they have botched their own repair.

What if one of the wheels needs to be replaced? The replacement standard issue wheel will be diamond cut so it won't match the others. The BMW warranty team may also reject the claim because of the BMW shortcut work.

Unless you can prove 100% BMW messed up the repair, they'll never repair it under warranty. The only time any dealer ever has done so is if they caused the damage in the first place.

I believe they usually hire a third party to do repairs. My dealer messed up my rims and damaged the aftermarket paint on them and they paid full price for both repair of rim and the paint.

If you have a wheel repaired, made sure they're careful with the clear, to keep it away from the lug holes. My wheel had a thick layer of clear on it, and some of it ended up melting and basically fused the wheel to the hub (probably more of an issue if you track your car, which I did a few times last year). I nearly had an aneurysm getting that wheel off last fall, and ended up screwing up three of my lug bolts in the process.

It turns out that BMW did sand the wheels and re-paint to make good kerb damage. They did this prior to my purchase. Closer inspection of the BMW Warranty shows that the wheels are excluded. But BMW did sell me alloy wheel insurance which includes replacement wheel cover. If I ever need to invoke this I'll have one diamond cut wheel and three painted wheels.

When I talked this through with the Sales Manager he argued that it was perfectly acceptable to repair the wheels to a non diamond finish. However he also accepted the problem with the insurance and offered to reimburse me should I ever have to replace a wheel on the insurance by paying the costs to make the replacement wheel match the other three. I accepted this offer and consider this a reasonable settlement.
