Might be upgrading this weekend! E46 to E92
Hi,
So, I've had my 2003 M3 (black, 6 speed, coupe) for about a year and a half now and it's been a great car and I've learned a lot driving it. I came from a motorcycle background but work and life made it so I hardly ever rode. I wanted a toy that I could use everyday and that was somewhat practical so I picked up the E46 M3. Driving isn't quite as big of a rush as riding a bike but I look forward to driving my car every single time I get into it. The time has come to upgrade. While the E46 is a beautiful car, it's a bit dated looking now and my car is getting close to 100,000 miles and things are starting to break and wear out. The local dealership is getting a CPO 2009 carbon black E92 with the DCT transmission. I'm going for a test drive on Saturday and hopefully on Tuesday, I'll be the proud owner of an E92. |

Hope the test goes well, but the interactive experience of a car, especially a modern car like the E92 isn't going to match that of the motorcycle, but it will give you practicality and safety. I made a similar switch 7 years ago and got into a E39 M5 with similar power. Just don't expect the same experience as you bike. BTW, 100K Miles on as S54 motor is easy. You have to balance the cost of maintenance against the added cost of the upgrade. I just picked up a e92, but I still think the e46 looks good and may get one as a track car in a year or so.
Good luck with the test drive.

Welcome! Hope the test drive goes well and you can get a good price.
Let us know your impressions of how the E92 compares with the E46.

E9x is way more refined... however, that V8 is intoxicating.

Hopefully the car is what you want, and is in great shape. Btw there is no carbon black e9x... It is Jerez black.
Congrats on the up coming purchase.

I went from an E46 M3 to my current E92 M3, I highly recommend you take the E92 for a good long drive were you can truly open it up and get a good feel. My first experience when shopping around was not that great simply because I only took the E92 for a short drive and wasn't overly impressed. At the time I felt the E92 wan't much quicker than my old car... Forward a couple months after and had the opportunity to do another test drive in a nice long stretch of highway and then figured how wrong I was! It's been a year since I bought the E92 and still can't wipe the smile off my face everytime I go for a drive... Good luck!

OP: You may want to consider an E93. For a number of motorcyclists on this forum, owning a cabriolet has been a "closer" experience to a motorcycle.

You will never look back once you have made the switch.
Or so I hear. I am sure that Kerrit will chime in giving me shit for not buying an M3 yet

Made the switch from e46 to e92 and it was night and day. I agree that you have to experience the car on an extended test drive to truly understand it's capabilities. The engine is something else and intoxicating once you get to know it......regardless of DCT or Manual. I am happy I got into the car a couple of years ago and did not wait. Good luck!

You'll love the E92 M3! I've had mine for 3 years and still haven't grown tired of it.

Good luck on your purchase. The e92 is not as raw as the e46 but it should satisfy your needs.

Just upgraded from an '03 E46 to a '10 E92 about six weeks ago. I will always, always have an uber man crush on the E46 style but the E92 is way more intoxicating to drive, IMO.
