This is simple to me, the 335 is a nice car, I like it, but I prefer the M3 no matter what because its an M and its more special period, even if the 335 is just as fast or faster. Don’t really care about that!

In the second scenario, which the OP seems to be concerned about, the M3 needs to have better straight line performance than the modded 335, in which case the M3 needs to be modded as well. Yes, at that point both cars lose warranty, but the M3 ends up performing better in all regards and the true price differential would probably be $15-20 higher for the M3 as FI can't be had for a few grand.
Makes sense, pretty soon though the 335 can be modded with () all dinan products which won't void the warranty but be as quick as a stock M3 but the M3 is still in a class of its own. I like my car stock though cause ill never spend money on Dinan products and I don't want to void my warranty either so for now all you M3 drivers can have fun smoking me

Now what will through the M3 over the top though is FI, I can only imagine what a beast that would be if BMW put a TT V8 in an M3.............................................

You sure won't be smoked by me in any kind of street drag race as I wouldn't race any car for real (all the way) at a stop light. Not worth risking lives over...

From 45-60 that isn't much of a difference.

I saw the 200 8 M3 in person, it's way nicer than the 335 as far as build.

335 and M3 is like 360 Modena and Ferrari 430

We could do one of those races that you see on M5board and GTBOARD where theres like 2 miles of road and no one around. That would be fun

If I chipped my 535ixT I would only go with the Dinan just for that reason.

Many of us knew this was going to happen eventually and argued for it in the 335 vs M3 debates, but of course, this point was quickly dismissed. It took a couple of years basically for things to go bust. Probably more down the road.

Yes, Dinan matches BMW's warranty, but what happens after that? You're still facing potential major issues--if not with the turbos, with something else. Was the 335 drivetrain as a whole really designed to handle 400+hp? These guys are simply eating into whatever safety margin the designers built into the parts and assuming everything will be fine. And, what will this do to resale? Would I ever consider buying a used 335? No way--regardless of how hard the owner tries to convince me that he didn't chip his engine...

it doesnt really matter... coz all are boosting 13-15 psi, so they all will damage turbo's.

@Lucid: very good point about drive train/chassis

They're not, well at least not all of them. JB1 is around 10, SSTT and JB2 is at 11 psi, while JB2H brings it to 12. So there are some tunes available under 13 psi. And the main purpose for BMW to limit the available output of 335i N54 motor, is pure marketing.

Right. Every component of the 335 drive train was painstakingly designed to handle a 400+ hp engineering requirement, and then they just simply had to detune the engine because marketing didn't want that after the fact because nobody in BMW managed to think of that in advance. And, right again, there are no trade-offs between performance and reliability. Talk to Audi owners. They've been debating this issue for many years. They went through the same thing. They know extracting 30% more performance from a stock drive train has reliability implications.

It may partially be about protecting their model lineup (tii series) but it's also other issues, like protecting future used car values, it would not be good to have stealth tuned N54 motors blowing up turbos in a few years, not to mention what it would to to lease returns, CPOs and brand value. This isn't to say all tuned N54 motors lose reliability, but as a manufacturer why risk anything?

What sort of risk would the informed used 335i buyer take? Would one buy a used 335i without reason able assurance that some previous owner didn't boost with the risk of future failure?

They are also likely trying to protect and maintain emissions requirements.

If I stroked an E90 motor to add 25% power I'd be an fool to think I could drive it in for warranty service if the drivetrain ate itself.

mex, he's talking about any mods to vehicle voiding factory warranty, to my knowledge, the boost mods are not detectable when removed
And if you go the DINAN route, it is still covered under warranty

Don't feel so bad about the 335. I was tootling along enjoying my one day old M3 yesterday when I was completely outclassed by a ten year old Citroen Saxo with 4 young lads in it.

Clearly my M3 is no match for their French supercar...the bin lid sized exhaust and blue lights underneath it must do wonders for the performance. Even if it did look like a self-tanning booth on wheels and sound like a turtle being ripped from its shell.

It also went around the next corner on (at most) two wheels.

So don't worry about 335's : its those Saxo's that we should be afraid of...

I know a quite a few people who have been killed or injured due to street racing. Keep it on the track.
