.5 also initiated 2 tone interiors. For .75 they also changed the package designations and no longer had the Technology Package - it was incorporated into the Convenience package, essentially combining all the infotainment options.

Not quite accurate. The Technology Package was replaced by the Convenience Package for .5, not .75. The only change for .75 was BMW Apps, which is an option, not standard. Unlike Combox, which became standard for .5

And somewhere in here the "DSC Off" button changed from having that text to having the swervy car graphic and the word "Off". Not sure when that happened.

Hmm... I thought that happened in March too. I thought it was relabeled Convenience II or something. Oh, I think only starting in .75 you got the Auto Start control, set in North America to default in the OFF position. I had to get that BMW App options as well, looks like a waste of money for the most part.

Totally wrong. It became standard in 2011.5. There are BMW bulletins about that all over the place. Search 2010 September production changes. You even participated in a thread where you confirmed that someone with a 2011.5 had Combox even without iDrive: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=470475

Nope. Convenience and Auto Start/Stop both came out on 2011.5, but you're right that it defaults to off in the US. I got BMW Apps initially because I thought iPod Out would be cool, but I've ended up using it mostly to control Pandora.

For 2012, Convenience goes away because some of its features become standard and the others get rolled into a new Premium package. For September 2011 M3 sedans there's a new Convenience 2 and Premium 3 -- no idea why they made this change right before it's about to go out of production.

I think that you need to relax a little and read more carefully those documents and my posts: the Combox was introduced in September 2010 as the replacement of the optional TCU (Assist/Bluetooth) and MULF (USB/iPod adapter) modules.

From September 2011 to at least June 2012 the Combox (Assist, Bluetooth and USB) will be standard equipment in the MY2012 E92/E93 M3.

does it work the same way with the combox as it did with the TCU whereas if you do not have either bmw assist/bluetooth, sat radio, or premium sound you do not have one in the car?

If your M3 was produced on or after Sept 2010 and it does not have Assist/Bluetooth and the iPod adapter installed from factory then it does not have a Combox.

Premium Sound or Sat Radio do not have anything to do with the Combox or the TCU.

ahh ok...i was mistaken then. i dont have bluetooth/assist, but do have the ipod adapter. so i guess i do have the combox then. does that give me any sort of upgradeability with that? ie...retrofit of other options if needed?

Yes, there's Bluetooth in there, and if you have iDrive then BMW Apps and a second Bluetooth channel is also there. For Bluetooth you will need to add the microphone, the BT antenna (cabling is not there) and then coding.

Contact forum vendor BimmerTech for more information and a quote.

Ok, now I am confused. I have (or will soon) a .75 E90. I'm a stripped down kind of guy, so the only option I added was Ipod. Today I had to set up my Assist contact and password with my CA. Was he mistaken, or am I getting a combox?

The post-Sept 1 production E90 M3 has a new combo option (7H8) that includes the iPod, Assist and Bluetooth for $750 (making the iPod/USB basically for free).

Most probably that's what you got. And yes, it is the Combox as stated above.
