Exact same happened to me on the drivers side vent. Barely touched it & the handle came apart just like that. I haven't gotten mine fixed yet, will when it next needs anything more serious. Sucks, though.

My "hulk" broke one of the fronts and two of the rears on my x5. He was barely 3 yrs old at the time. Dealer covered the front dash but refused the rear. Actually, correction, my wife broke one of the rears crawling over the center console to the front seat from the rear seat while on a rode trip.

My center vents had the same thing happen. No big deal as it was under warranty and they replaced and upgraded the vents. I do recall the SA saying that its a known issue and that I needed the new updated front vents.

Bringing back an old thread. This just happened to me when I was cleaning my interior. Anyone replaced these themselves? Looks to be an easy DIY, just looking for some insight to avoid mistakes. Thanks.

Same thing happened on my 09... lightly moved it and it just fell apart. Never did fix it... not worth tearing apart the dash for something somewhat meaningless. But that's just me Obviously very poorly built

Yes, i'm waiting to hear back from my SA manager. Lat time he told me that my BMW extended warranty doesn't cover replacing them.

happened to me too...replaced it myself after getting the part. Easy fix. Just be careful to take out the switch in the middle, it has some wiring behind it. Snaps in and out.

Happened to my 10 E92 as well. There is no DIY to fix it by ourselves, need to replace the whole part.

That's it. Thanks for all the paranoia. I'm never altering the position of the vent adjusters again. And, if my passenger reaches for it I'll lunge for their wrist and scream like a banshee. Meanwhile, every time I turn on the A/C, I am waiting for the evaporator to blow up. I hover around the engine compartment while idling in the garage each night, listening for tell-tale ticking noises. I watch the tach like a hawk for idle fluctuations expecting each time to find my IACV has gone out on me. The Low Fuel Pressure sensor and Throttle Actuators haunt my every waking moment. My God, what's that noise from the rear end? Is that a drop of DCT fluid on the floor? AAAAAaaaaaaaaaagh!!!!
Can you imagine how bad it'll be when I DON'T have the warranty? |

Get out there and enjoy. Even if something does go wrong, its just a thing, it's not really that important in the grand scheme of things. |

Ulcers, are you kidding??? I went through that phase when I was 13. These days I generate so much stomach acid that I have these tubes hooked-up feeding five-gallon collection jugs I sell off to Dupont Chemical. Righteous bucks, dude! We're talking professional grade stress-monger here.
Just kiddn' ya, it's all good... |
