BMW M - crushed by Porsche and AMG

Always appreciated Chris' reviews and with time come to trust his opinions. Kind of sad to see BMW M seem to be loosing ground. Yeah I know the M4 shouldn't be compared with these motors but guess their own decision with a £140K price.

At least our old wheels comes cheap and make the right noise hey...

The video popped up on my suggestions this morning and I didn't even notice the M4 was part of this comparison. I'm a huge fan of Chris' videos and I thought his F80 M3 review was millimetrically perfect.

Not really sure the M4 GTS fits alongside the others here also. The market values for these I think are going to come down, at least here stateside I think people are asking sticker price for them now. In this video, its subtle but the criticism is on the GTS more than it is on the F8x. BMW special editions have never needed to be a better car to command the silly prices though, *cough* e36 LTW *cough* ...and that is probably where the distaste is directed at, at least that's my interpretation.

Totally agree, Chris do mentioned a couple of times that he like the F80 better (the sedan particular) being less made over and assumingly with a price more aligned with the car.

Altough it seems odd comparing the M4 GTS to these cars I think we can all agree the M4 GTS is a waste of money when compared to other options.

How on earth is this even a good comparison? Even if the GTS is extremely limited in production, I still don't think that the M4 should be compared in this category.

Even the m4 gts gets smashed on by everyday cars. Bmw just isn't the benchmark it once was.

Not $140K good, comparing to the RS is a little much but the 991.1 or .2 GT3 would destroy as well.

BMW ///M isn't what it once was anymore... The M4 is rubbish, the platform handles and performs a generation old. The new American sports cars can easily do better lap-times for virtually half the cost. The M cars of today have definitely lost their luster.

I still think it is. The GTS is a stretch in its own category. But the base M3 is still the benchmark

Good point Ace, comparing with other $70k cars the F8x probably still does a fine job.

It's the benchmark, because it's always been the benchmark because of its performance. But I would agree that now, in comparison with other cars, it's not what it used to be.

I mean, they're comparing the six-cylinder Camaro to the M2!

And that's why it's so hard for me to find a replacement for my M3. At the $70k level, at the $60k level, there just isn't a good replacement for the M3 at this price range.

Hey, so whats up with the M6 Ace, or is that meant to be a complement "only"??

BMW's answer, especially at the M4 price point, should probably have been a twin turbo V8..

i feel like it is included because of it's name. partly because it is riding on the curtails of the e9x M's reign over it's class. in '08, the e9x just about shit on everything. it was a good thing, because i feel like it caused everyone to go back to the drawing board to beat it.
thats why we have the mustang gt350 and camaro zl1/1le. just about every manufacturer has seriously stepped up their game in the last ten years. sadly, i don't think M division took as great of a leap as they needed to stay on top of their class.
the m4 gts in the car and driver's "drivers car" competition was just embarrassing. nothing special or note worthy about it amongst that group of cars.
badass car, don't get me wrong. i really dig it, just not what it needed to be.

I think for the price point, this is a great comparison and a reality check for BMW. So I honestly support this video, and believe it's accurate.

I had a M6 GC priced out with a dealer. I still didn't like pricing, so I walk away. I keep comparing everything about the M6 with the M3. It'll be a different car, but on pricing, M6 GC is a rock...it'll depreciate faster than a $80k sticker '14 F80.
