Power lag...
Question before I take my 2010 M3 coupe to the dealer... I'm feeling a lag in power when I give full acceleration. This can be at normal highway speeds or from a start. The RPMS race high then it kicks in, only a half second or so...does this sound normal?

Yes its DCT, My driving habits are a few weeks a month and it sits for a few weeks. I'm a pilot so I'm out of the country half the month. I just started to notice this but on the other hand I don't race it hardly ever. Ok newbie question...dme?

Frankly it sounds normal to me. The big V8 needs to get up in the RPM range to really get going. Perhaps you're just not used to it but drop the transmission into lower gear(s) and get those RPM's up. That will get you the response you are expecting...

I don't really know how anyone can answer that for your without actually trying it - your idea of a big lag and my idea of a big might be totally different. Try it in manual mode, get the RPMs up to 4500-5000 and punch it - should go instantly, if there's a noticeable lag then you may have an issue might want to run some FI cleaner and run it hard for a tank before you bring it in. With your driving habits and location you may be experiencing some condensation in the tank as well - there are additives for that too.

Sounds normal. Try manual mode.

And DME is BMW's acronym for the ECU. As to the symptom itself, I'm confused by your point about the RPMs racing high and then it kicking in. Are you saying the RPMs jump quickly (without a commensurate increase in speed or an actual gear shift) and then the car starts accelerating? If so, that's a symptom of a worn clutch, or clutches since you're DCT. Otherwise, you could be seeing a shift followed by some clutch slippage, which you can rule out by putting your car into Manual mode. But if this behavior is new and concerns you, it should probably be diagnosed by a shop. If on the other hand you've encountered it for a while and are only now getting around to asking about it, as has already been said, this engine does not make a ton of power in the low end, so don't expect apocalyptic acceleration in 6th gear at highway speeds -- and in fact going full throttle at low RPMs in higher gears is inadvisable as well because you would be lugging the engine.
