Fake sound M5. Seriously???
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7...#ixzz1iDvK1Tkz
Maybe I can burn a CD of a E39 M5. Or play the sound of an Enzo in a 328i. This is an insult. After putting an M badge on anything, now playing fake engine noise? LOL. M cars are sure different than when I started buying them 12 years ago. Time to move on for me.

Really? This option is forcing you to move on from BMW? So all of the other qualities you've loved about M cars for the past 12 yrs have now been negated by this? A bit extreme of you if you ask me. Im sure it can be deactivated if it bothered the owner as much as it does you. Maybe experience it first before making such a harsh negative judgement? Im looking fwd to experiencing it for myself before trashing it but whether I like it or not, it certainly wont wholly turn me off to the BMW brand and everything i love about their M products.

1 - de-activate system
2 - get an AM exhaust 3 - roll windows down, enjoy... (or skip steps 1-3 and get a soft-top convertible you get all kind of road / engine / wildlife noise in the cabin) no need for that stereo BS crap !!! but, thanks for the post, i actually never saw that before !!! |

Everybody is a critic even before driving it But guess what? A lot of other auto manufacturers are starting to do this. Audi is also said to be adding audio enhancement to their V6 diesel. So what? As long as it drives well, I seriously doubt owners will be turned off by it.

Did they do a market survey? Or are they just trying to be innovative? Not bashing, i'm just posing a question.

I really don't get the problem with this. Clearly people love hearing the great engine/exhaust sounds so most people buy an exhaust setup or intake. Those in essense are all simply sound waves being modified by pipe size shape and those sound waves hitting your ear drums and you percieving a sound which you enjoy.
As long as it is not percievably produced and it sounds real than I say more power to the technology. |

I don't think so, but I couldn't find anything to support the subwoofer claim when I scoured through the parts list.

Wait. What!? There's a hose channeling sounds into the cabin of my M3??? Not sure how I didn't know that the last three years, but I'm sure one of you OG forum members would gladly knock me around for that.

There must have been some consumer feedback that led to develop this. It would not make a very good business case to do it simply because they can. My guess is that when surveyed, potential customers said that engine sound was important to them. They probably further asked if a synthetically enhanced engine note would be preferred to a natural one that was not as pleasing, and found that indeed many people would rather the former.
For me, it just seems like one more thing to go wrong. Even though it uses the existing audio hardware for the most part, it is still adding unnecessary (to me) complexity to the car. |

A tube or some other mechanical way of channeling in engine noise is one thing, electronic reproduction not directly produced by the engine is another. I don't care how good the car is, the world is getting more synthetic by the day and its disappointing to see BMW do this on the M5.

Several journalist commented that at some points the sound can be localized to the speakers so the experience is not seamless. To me this is silly, the real deal is under the hood. Its like having a naked girl 5 feet away, covering her up and then giving a guy pictures of her and saying "this is what she looks like naked" just doesn't make sense to me.
