DCT on Track & Downshifting Problem

I like many of your posts, well thought out and lots of details. However, they also seem VERY HEAVY on the speculation. The information you posted above is simply not any that just any old consumer can get a hold of. So if you are guessing you should say so. My conclusion is 1. You are purely speculating, 2. You know someone inside BMW directly involved with M-DCT. These really are the only two possibilities. So don't get me wrong speculation is good and useful but you should mention it.

Yes, it will put it back in the optimum gear for the particular road/engine speed. That might not be the same gear you were in when you went to neutral (as I am assuming you are coasting to a stop or something like that and will be slowing down)

I can't imagine it would. The computer should be able to do it perfectly.

College hockey and agressive skiing have left me with memories of friends not being able to drive for weeks because of a left knee injury that prevented MT operation. So, even though my knee is pretty good with no major injuries (knock on wood) I have been experiencing some issues over the last few months and need an MRI. Very minor clarification. It does not choose the "optimum" gear, it simply chooses THE gear based on all of the normal operating conditions that determine what gear the car should be in. It chooses the optimum gear when doing things like the kick down.

Actually I've found it chooses the highest gear it can choose for a particular speed. Sometimes the revs are very low (not less than idle) when going back into gear from neutral and usually I find I have to downshift after going back into gear. Not a big deal and easy to accomplish.

They mean when you come off nutral at speed and engage the system. Otherwise, if it is in manual mode (or whatever that is called) you are in control.

If you really want the best acceleration from the MDCT, you would use "D" mode.....the computer is best to pick the upshift points.

True for SMG / MDCT / old F1 cars....

Hitting the rev limiter is easy and very bad for acceleration.

100% agreed with you, I just meant if you want to be in full control. But yes, I do agree the car will do a better job than the driver. This is why on the MT6 i increased the rev limiter a tad so I wouldn't hit it all the time, its very difficult to do this perfectly.

Tried this as a work around. It doesn't always pick the optimum gear, even in D5.

Edit: in the video I have from the car it appears to shift mid turn, without input from the driver (In S6). As I type this I am droping the car off to pull the fault codes (if any) from the gearbox.

Yeah looks like a defect to me.

D mode is for running in a straight line.....downshifting best left for humans.

If we look at the modern F1 cars when semi's were allowed, upshift was controlled by the computer and downshift by humans.

Agree with the auto upshift comment. Should really be an option in the M drive settings.
