It's like Porsche called the 991 a 912 instead if a 911.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Uh, when Porsche called it a 930, no one seemed to complain. Bad analogy. These early rumors are not necessarily cast in stone...

actually the 912 was a 911 with a 4-cyl engine instead of the flat-6.
If an M4 meant an naturally aspirated inline 6 with much less weight hell yeah i would not mind the name change.

Someone needs to tell BMW's marketing department that "4" means "death" in Chinese, and is considered a deeply unlucky number. Selling an "M4" in China -- which is now the largest market in the world for car sales -- is like Chevy selling the Nova ("it does not go") in Spanish speaking markets. BMW may not care what hardcore M enthusiasts think, but they will care about not shooting themselves in the foot in the Chinese market.

M4 could be the beginning of the next 30 years of BMWs phenomenal high hp, well balanced, daily driver to track beast like the E30 was. All this speculation is bs. BMW will do the enthusiast right. Of that I have no doubt. Just wait and see. But you know you can please some but never all. (unless it's an E9x)

An M3 is an M3. You can't spend 30 years building such a name, pure benchmark for every single automaker out there and all of the sudden change it to M4 because it's a new naming system. What would be interesting is for the M3 since it's such a name, such a car and such a legacy, to be the only one not to follow the new naming system. The M3 has always been above all else. This would be no different.
But the new "M3" being a Sedan, turbocharged, I6, with no screaming 8k redline, makes you wonder if it's an M3 at all. Now, all the comments of "c63 here I come", "My next car is a p-car", etc, are non sense. I would never stop buying a car because the badge has a different number on it. |

Sorry, but the people saying this kind of thing are simply ridiculous.
So you're going to get a C63 just because of a name change / badge, even if an "M4" still wipes the floor with its future competition? Pffft. That's badge whoring defined.

We need to start a online petition (via a vote thread) on this forum and see if we can try and influence BMW from staying away from the 'M4' name .. and stay with M3... I bet they watch this forum ... and yes maybe we aren't that many .. but perhaps it'll tip them over and they'll change their mind.

But what about the fact that it is a 4 litre V8, making 414 bhp?
Do you hear the sound of that? That is the sound of a billion chinese folk all of a sudden dropping dead upon news of my revelation

BMW...
...brands a 4-door sedan an M3 when the M4 moniker is available. ...brands what we count as the fifth generation M3 coupé an M4 even though the "M3" moniker would be a better fit from a both a heritage point of view as well truth-in-advertising the number of turbos clustered beneath the hood. ...will launch the fifth generation formerly known as M3 with the most family friendly variant; a sedan/saloon. Has whomever in Munich missed anything that could further confuse M Welt? God help us all.

They way BMW is diluting and "whoring" out the M name these days with all those stupid other rumoured models (X3M LOL), how anyone can be surprised or concerned with this latest marketing crap is beyond me.
