BMW announces more powerful / efficient twin turbo 3.0L diesel engine
As featured on Bimmerpost homepage.
BMW has announced that its 3.0L I-6 diesel engine has received an upgrade. The newer inline diesel engine will boast 306hp / 442 lb-ft torque (up from 286hp / 428 lb-ft). In addition, fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels will be reduced by 4% The fuel injection system will be upgraded to BMW's latest gen common rail system, capable of injector pressure levels of 2,000 BAR (29,000 psi) (up from 1,600 BAR). This will allow more precision in the fuel flow metering. No word yet on if the US will be receiving this engine in the near term. Quote:

God I wish they offer this new diesel in the U.S. My fellow americans are completely ignorant when it comes to these new diesels, thinking they are like the old ones turning there noses up at them. My current car is the last daily non-diesel I own.
BMW FTW!!! Cheers, e46e92

wow... that's amazing. imagine that on an X3 or X5... can we say torque monster? that's enough power to out haul some small trucks here in the US.

So, who thinks the US-sPec 335d is underpowered? I don't. 250km/h at an ease on the Autobahn. Oh and yea stoplight-stoplight pick up is awesome as well if someone is after that. To much power in a diesel will result in bad fuel economy which somewhat kills the purpose. I love the 335d with its 425 tq. We nicknamed it the tourqemonster... I would not need more power for no reason. But only my .02 ..

the mass of these vehicles is too much to start efficiently. increasing the torque numbers will help improve acceleration, and make the vehicle more usable. this is a good improvement. i'd gladly take this diesel over a gas equivalent, especially now that it matches HP to HP with the gas engine, but gives significantly more torque.

They've already got better tuning modules on the diesels I believe. There was some stuff floating around here about them.... IIRC, not as much of a bump in power, but portable and end-user friendly.
The fact that this version is cleaner means it should come to the US no matter what. I'm tired of powering my car on the political fuckup that is ethanol. |

Exactly, what a huge mistake on the first go-around. This engine is a nice step-up but don't disregard the monster that currently exists at the dealership. My wife's X3 is up in Nov. and I'm seriously considering the the X5 diesel. |

BMW has no manual that will handle that kind of torque.
Maybe new 8 speed auto will be fitted (I know, no comparison, but still nicer than 6 speed auto). and I really hope they bring that updated diesel to 335d... soon. That should bring more croud to buy diesel... Salesman: same 307hp, 140 more torque and 35% better fuel economy... Only $3k Extra... and you quality for Tax rebate of $900... What color you like? |

It is just that i drove a 118d for three month. It is rated at 144hp and gues what: Already enough power and plenty of pickup. And while doing 220 kmh/ 135mph (top speed) most of the time I averaged 37 MPG. If I'd be to drive more tame 49MPG and up is not impossible. What I want to say is that it does not always have to be the very biggest engine. I cannot wait to see the 120d or 123d beeing introduced to the US market. These cars are plain awesome. And yes, I already know that I will be the one to yell the loudest as it comes to test driving the new engine... ;-)

Maybe my english isnt that good. But i'm reading it that the 330d is getting replaced, and the 335d is still there?
On another site http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/23/b...n-of-twin-tur/ It says that its the 335d that is getting replaced. |

No, its the 335d that is getting replaced. It is stil a 3.0 engine but with additional turbo.
The new 335d will be introduced in autumn 2009 so you should be safe when you ordered a 2010 model. But make sure to ask your dealer to confirm you will be getting this updated version. There is no point getting the "old" 335d now since the updated 330d (on sale now) is equally fast, cheaper and uses less fuel. Quote:

Of course every driver likes other caracteristics. The only thing that I can think of is that someone might miss the higher RPM range? Or do you own a Gas station? lol ;-)

I have driven a few diesels and at the extremes are my grandpas 1976 300D- before the turbo motor- and yes that would suck to live with, but then of course the 335d, I absolutely loved it, my next car is going to be a diesel for sure

Wow , not dissapointed at all, in fact so impressed, it out performs most petro cars up to the BMW 325i .... 330i is another kettle of fish .... but yeah what I am saying is I am more than happy. I have a 320d 163bhp, 340nm torque, woof woof ... it goes nicely and coupled with a Automatic Steptronic system the torque is delivered nice and smoothly!!
