BBS Ghetto or not Ghetto

I have yet to own a car with aftermarket wheels. I am 100% clueless on what makes an aftermarket wheel brand better than the next...
I happen to see some of these photoshop pics of the new M3 with the BBS brand wheels and thought hey now that looks pretty snazzy... but they are pretty proud of them $$$$ so to speak. Anyone want to educate me on aftermarket wheels 101? Any insight would be most appreciated.

FYI: BBS makes BMW's OEM wheels and many other manufacturers. BBS wheels are one of the highest quality wheels out there, BBS LM's, LM-R's, RGR's, RS-GT's, and CH's are definitely ones of the hottest high performance wheels.

you'll see some of these wheels on porsches, on F1 cars, on classics, on current BMW's, etc.

some people opt to keep their originals, if you are leasing you uprobably need to return them with the car. but most other people sell them here or on eBay. i mean tires alone are like 1300+ on originals. so maybe u wanna reuse the tires and sell the rims... that's up to you.

oh my 335? the one in my "garage"? those are replica wheels of BMW CSL wheels. they're cheap, decent. but definitely nowhere near BBS quality and status.

btw, when u buy bbs and use them for a few years, if you take care of them you can sell them for a price that's pretty damn close to what you bought them for. they're good IMO.

Keep the originals for resale.

IMO dont go bigger than 19's. If you do you sacrifice performance for bling...Say no to bling.

I hear I change out wheels like I change out girls so w/that in mind, here are my thoughts on wheels either my friends and/or myself have owned (1st hand experience, not just read online) in no particular order:

BBS - Had the RGR's on my old e46 M3 & liked them alot. Never had an issue w/them. Strong, durable & very stylish but very boo coo expensive. FWIW, all forged BBS wheels are made in Japan.

Volk - The most respected Japanese wheels out there made by Rays Engineering. Also one of the strongest wheels available. My friends & I have had numerous sets w/no issues EVER!

Work - Great looking wheels & are pretty strong. Kinda pricey but well worth it IMO.

SSR - Aka Super Soft Rims! Some of their wheels bend rather easily (Comps) but they have nice designs.

O.Z. - Strong wheels & somewhat affordable. A friend of mine had an issue w/the paint finish fading & chipping but I've never heard of others w/this issue so I hope it's just an isolated incident w/his set only.

Motegi - Cheap price & cheaply made. They bend easily.

Centerline - Insanely cheap price but really good quality wheels & made in the U.S.A.

American Racing - Cheap price but crap for wheels (in terms of strength) unless you have thick tire sidewalls (read: suv's & trucks) to protect from bending.

Rota - Cheap price & decent quality wheels. There was a bad batch made that caused the wheel face to breakoff from the rim/barrel of the wheel. It's been resolved supposedly.

Racing Hart - Decent price & supposedly they had a few bad batches of bent wheels. A friend got it & it was bent already. Sent them back & another set received. The 2nd set was bent as well. They were the shiznit back in the day but not anymore.

HRE - Had the 841r's & way overpriced. Good looking wheels but they're not very strong at all. Their Comp line is stronger though.

iForged - Absolute crap for wheels. Had a 3-piece wheel (Daytona) & fitment was horrendous even though they were supposedly designed & custom made for a previous car I had. I'll give them credit for making it fit...after the 3rd attempt but that's it.

Enkei - Good quality wheels for a great price. They also make oem wheels but mainly for Japanese car manufacturers (Honda, Mitsubishi & Nissan to name a few).

Also, not all wheels are created equally & just b/c one wheel is forged & another one is cast-aluminum doesn't mean the cast-aluminum wheel is crap. Here's a good description of each type of wheel construction:

Other than cosmetic reasons, a replacement wheel should also save you a little weight. Have you visited the Tire and Wheel forum here? There is a group buy coming up on some MORR VS8 wheels that looks pretty interesting. 19' forged wheels which save around 6lbs (maybe?) per wheel? Less unsprung weight is a good thing, btw. $2500 for 4 I think is what the GB is going to go for; they kind of look like the CSL wheel.

I'm thinking about it, and plan on reusing my stock tires, selling the wheels on Ebay or Craigs, or heck, here. Not sure how much I could get for them though.

IMO, they're about average for 19's (24-28 pounds depending on widths). In otherwords, similar in weight to the oem 19's.
