Locking Lug Nuts

What's a good brand for locking wheel nuts? I know wheel locks only slow down real thieves, but I rather have the little protection than none.

I've been looking for some good locking extended and opened ended lugs in red, but can't find anything under $150. I know I shouldn't be cheap on something as important as lugs, but when there are sets on ebay for $40 it's kind of hard justifying paying $200+ for nuts.

I've had two sets of Project Kics R40 lugs and I liked them so far. The key is a bit uninspiring but does the job. I like how the interface doesn't mar the wheels at the lug points.

If you see some sets on eBay for $40, get two for that price and double up the locks.

I know BBS sells closed ended lugs in red but those are way more in cost

Problem is I don't know if I really trust ebay "forged" nuts.

can you post a pic of which socket adapter you used on your torque wrench? I have 1/2 wrench and I haven't gone to home depot yet to find the socket for my kics

It's just a standard 6 point 17mm impact socket from any auto parts store. In my case, it's from Sears (Craftsman) to a 3" extension. I have a 1/2" drive torque wrench as well.

You can use a Chromoly socket (the shiny ones) if you aren't using an impact wrench. Impact sockets will be black.

Let me know if you still need a picture after that

Oh yeah the 17mm one I have and I have the kic socket for the locking lug nut, I wanted to see what adapter I needed to my 1/2" drive. I guess the pic will help

I'm not sure what other adapter you need.
You should be using a 1/2" drive wrench, extension, and socket
The Kic socket goes in to the 17mm socket... unless I'm missing something...
Here's an example

The black piece is not a true socket. It doesn't have the square drive on the end.
The torque driver male side needs a female to mate with. You have an adapter (not needed) that looks like it steps down from 1/2" to 3/8"

right and the black and silver sockets were part of the purchase inside the box, essentially i can't use the lug key until i find an adapter to tighten, i thought you might have had an idea since you've had 2 sets of kics

the 1/2" to 3/8" adapter is what i use for the regular sockets we're used too

On this very day, I got rid of all my locking lug nuts and replaced them with standard lug nuts.
The reason I did it was because I tried taking off a wheel (with a screw in the tire) and found that the key would not work. The tire shop guy got it off and I told him to get rid of the other three.
I'm not interested in having a slow leaking tire (or a flat) and not being able to take it off and bring it somewhere to get fixed.
Speaking of tires, the next time I have to change tires, I'm going to look hard at installing run flats on my E93. This thing with injecting some kind of goo into a flat tire via the valve stem sounds real messy to me.

Ok not sure where we're losing things in translation here but I'll give it one more go.
The torque wrench should be a 1/2" drive
You will need a 1/2" drive 3" extension
You will need a 1/2" drive 17mm socket
You will need your Kics keyed socket meaning that you have to spin it around on the lug until it engages. The splines match up only one way.
The 17mm socket goes over the hex end of the shiny Kics socket/key.

Amazon.com: TEKTON 47772 1/2-Inch Drive by 17 mm Shallow ...
http://goo.gl/UlfgP1

This is an example of the socket I'm referring to.
I honestly suggest that if you can't figure out what socket to use, you may want to go to a specialist.

Oh and I forgot, the 17mm socket goes over the non locking lugs (the lugs without the splines on them).

There goes my sense of not doing the common sense. I did not think to use the 17mm socket over the silver locking adapter and I initially went to the black socket first and automatically thought it wasn't going to work unless I had a different socket that I didn't already have. Problem solved.

After reading this I counted 8 different splines/ribs on the lug nut for the key and I can see the time consumed trying to get that 1 rib right where it belongs and doing that in a hurry.

Dumb question, what's wrong with the OEM locks? No lock is 100% theft-proof, it's just there to deter the casuals.

I run Kics R40 and have been really happy with them. I swap wheels about every two weekends for autocross and they make the job simple. Locks seem to work well enough, they are enough to keep the honest thief away.
