Top speed you did in M3? I got 200mph...
I recently got stationed in Germany, and was doing some top speed runs... I was wondering if anyone else here done something similar?
Problem with a top speed run is that most of autobahns, around my base, are curvy, hilly etc... so not a good place for top speed run. I went to pick up a friend, a bit far away, and was able to hit 200mph (speedo) and car kept crawling. Unfortunatly I didn't record that run, but after telling couple of ppl about it, they were in somewhat of disbelief. I since have been trying to record another run like this, but all unsuccessful. 160-170mph is feasable on most roads (although little turns are becoming quite tricky at those speeds), even 190mph is achievable... however 200mph is eluding me, need to travel for couple of hours to get the right stretch, bad weather, work, etc. I probably won't be able to do one of those run until next season, when the weather starts getting warmer... So i guess i was wondering if anyone else was able to achieve this result? Mods: Fabspeed HFC & xpipe, ESS tune. Here is one CRAPPY video of me trying... I know, I know, I putted the hand over the speed at the wrong moment, but at those speeds and with some traffic i felt safer with my hand there... last thing you see is 180, but you see the tach keeps moving. Now, I have made another run this past weekend (during the day) and you can see a lot better (thou not great either... i can't find a good place to attach the camera). That vid has about 10 minutes worth of autobahn driving, with average speeds of 140-150mph (100mph-195mph), so keep tuned. |

With the limiter removed at least 184mph (real, not speedo) is possible with an otherwise stock M3. Just need enough space. At those speeds the speedo is going to read 200+mph.
So I've heard, anyway

hmm, well, at those speeds i'm not goign to fumble with the GPS (as mine doesn't have a cup), but i think if i check the speed against speedo at 130mph or 150mph it should be sufficient.

I bet 70mph feels like you're walking after you slow down from a top speed run like that. The speedometer will be off by a fair amount, but you could always try to calculate exact speed by checking the RPM, also.

would you happen to know how to do that?
On my top speed run I believe it was around 8200rpm(6th gear, 6spd manual car)... I have a separate map from ESS for a raised RPM (8600), but i don't think i will be trying that for tires sakes and the aerodynamics. As i said before, the car kept creeping at 200mph, i just didn't have enough space. |

Select the RPM/MPH correlation on the left side Input your gear ratios (3.85 final drive, 0.87 6th gear) rear tire diameter (stock rear tires are 26.3") and RPM. Tach is usually fairly close. 8200 rpm in 6th gear on stock tires is ~192 mph

8200 RPM should be just about 190 mph when calculated by RPM, gear ratio, and tire size.

Hey great effort - keep it up, but please, keep it in Europe. For me, I do not want to see this attempted on a US highway, and particularly at night -- you have a death wish?

There's at least one member here with a blower that has the 3.15 DCT diff in his 6MT car. Good for about 235mph on stock tires at 8200 rpm. I'd think the 3.45 would be a better compromise for a 6MT, you'd need about 900bhp to get to 235 in an M3

NICE. I know theres other factors like aero, but in general how much whp is needed to break 200 in an m3? Another question - what street tire is rated to 200?

I ran 179 indicated in the standing mile and was measured at 168.4 so the speedo is off by about 6.29%

272 kph/170 mph indicated, really 155 mph, on the A1 by the 'Ring. This was in a Sixt Rental Car M3 so the limiter was intact.
On the 'Ring about 140 mph and change going into Schwedenkreuz.

Thats really crazy and dangerous. Even if your doing 190mph ... between your street tires + the aero generated under the car is asking for some serious mangled death.
For the sake of others and yourself, please stop attempting these 200mph runs on public roads. You have no idea about the forces of physics your messing with. |

Agreed. The rear end twitchiness when braking from 140 mph into Schwedenkreuz at the 'Ring surprised me. Could've been the crest just before the braking zone and me braking a little too soon.
