SSR wheels...opinions?
LIke the title says, what's your take on them. THey are synonymous in the JDM scene. Does the moniker, Super Soft Rims still hold true?

![]() OP, this is the same question that was being asked when nobody used to have Volk's on ///M E9X's, now though people stand by them no questions. SSR in my eyes can be treated the same. |

Why did I keep buying them? They would bend one at a time and I was too cheap (or broke) just to replace the whole set. I also wanted the competitive advantage of the light weight. |

SSR also rhymes with super strong wheels
![]() From what I gather only the GT3s were soft and had issues. Other wheels from then on are excellent; lightweight and strong. I had GT2-Hs on the E46 M3 and they were fantastic wheels. Got a flat with them once and wasn't able to pull over right away (163 right before downtown SD). I had to drive 60ish for a couple minutes on the flat tire. I thought the rim would be done for... but no, it took it like a champ! Try that with rota/linea corse/other cheap reps. I've seen them bend or crack for much much less! |

Loved My SSR GT1s
Had a set on my E36. The car is gone but I still have the wheels. Thought I might use them again someday.
Bent two on an absolutely brutal pothole in Chicago, boxed into traffic on the Dan Ryan and could not avoid. Replaced one, the other size was discontinued so I had it repaired, never bent another. SSR Competition (aka Type C) were built for light weight more than strength, and did seem to bend more often. We don't carry the new, post-bankruptcy SSR, so not sure how they are now. But man I loved my GT-1s.

I had the very light weight all gloss black SSR Type C for the S2000 back in the day. Not offered to the US back then. Never had an issue and were very strong. I had gone through Eurosport back in the day for these.

They look good, I'll give them that. I hear they no longer pass JWL/VIA certification though?
My friend has Type C's and one bent/cracked, but we suspect that Crevier BMW went on a joyride with his car during service and did something. His wheels were perfectly fine when he dropped it off, but right after he got it back it was leaking air like mad. He has no evidence so he couldn't do anything, poor guy. Until that incident though, his wheels took plenty of daily driving abuse with no issues. |

Make friends with a wheel repair guy. I've seen them bend on the tire machine with experienced people accustomed to dealing with 3-piece formula car wheels and other fragile stuff doing the work. They do seem to bend and not break though

Here is what my friend said in response to this thread:
"SSR is one of the longest standing and respected wheel manufacturers of the world. They are the first company to ever make a 3 piece wheel. Our wheels are in IN HOUSE(we make many of other company's wheels) to not be named and even provide barrels to countless more. How many wheel manufacturers can honestly say that they make their wheels in house with their own machines? No outsourcing here. We own our machines, our buildings, our land and as a company are very stable. Now it is true that SSR was bought out by Tanabe years ago, there have been changes in quality control and it is arguably one of the best made wheel in the world. ALL of the wheels that we produce are JWL (and VIA) certifiied and if they didn't, they wouldn't be offered. If there ever was a wheel/size/width/offset that didn't pass, it was never offered. Now there are many SSR GT3s and Comps out there. Many of which were bought through tire rack and many made to their specs. There were bad production runs but those issues were sorted out. Even to this day, you still see many of the GT3s and Comps running on cars even though they are old and have many miles on them, they keep ticking. As far as lead time goes, when ordering wheels, we offer redrilling on our 3 piece wheels and color changing at no extra cost (unless it's a color like SBC or Spectrum silver etc, but any color like bronze, gold, gunmetal, white, etc that is found on another wheel can be finished on your wheel), it just takes more time (3.5 months on average, no 1 year wait like other JDM brands). Since SSR is a part of Tanabe as well as More Japan, there is a container coming in every month. No waiting on the water to "fill a container" before leaving Japan." http://ssr-wheels.com/about/ |

Went off track in a spot with minimal runoff and hit about a 2' embankment.
