Angry Help! Electronic Damping Control Malfunction :(

Hey everyone

So I'm driving into work today and I'm greeted by this lovely message 10 minutes into my drive:

"Electronic Damping Control Malfunction - EDC. Driving comfort reduced. Drive moderately. Have the system checked by your BMW center as soon as possible"

The car only has 3600 miles on it. Anyone know what this could mean? I restarted the car and it still had the error message.

Thanks in advance!

I just scheduled an appointment within the next hour. I didn't think to have them tow it. It isn't too far from here so I'll probably drive it in. =/

Hope it's something minor VS. Keep us posted. Good luck. Little off topic, but did you have any software updates yet? I know we are around the same build date. Thanks

Thanks man.. no I haven't had to take it into the dealership for anything so no clue on the software update. The only other time was the 1200 mile service.

I'll ask them to see if there is an update. I've been out of the loop for a bit.. is there any update worth getting??

Just dropped it off. The service advisor hasn't seen this specific error code before. He mentioned that it might not even be covered by the new car warranty. I'm hoping he is just saying that since he has no idea on the issue. Anyone else see this error before?

He's full of shit. It has to be covered. Unless you were down there tapping things with a screwdriver, you're fine.

I literally took the car in within an hour of the message popping up. Didn't even pop open the hood or fidget with anything lol.

Nothing. I hope you're right. I called bs on him but he said I might have to call bmw NA if it's not covered.

Thanks for the response. 700 miles?? If the error messaged had popped up at 700 miles for me.. it would've put a big damper on my ED experience...

Couple questions:
1. Did the error go away for good after they put in the new shock?

2. Did the dealership give you a loaner for a week or how were you "compensated" besides them fixing it for free?

3. Is there anything else I should tell them if they pull something like " we couldn't replicate the issue / we can't find the problem blah blah"?

Thanks

Thanks for the links man. I had seen the first two but not the last one. I guess the consensus is that it could be a loose connection, faulty shocks, or jammed shocks

Update: Master tech said that it will take a long time to replicate the issues and they will need the car overnight. Guess I'll find out tomorrow what the deal is.

1. Yes it went away for good.
2. No loaner for me....under the age, they fixed it for free. It is under warranty.
3. Well my faulty error message was on when i went in and I could not function the edc. So i was left in the stiffest mode.

Good luck my friend. If it takes too long give bmw na a call. If it only takes a couple days then thats normal.

Thanks for the answers. They are working on getting me a loaner. Yes, I agree, the car is left in the stiffest setting.. pretty sure it's stuck in sports mode. I had to drive the car in VERY carefully beacuse the streets here are full of potholes everywhere.

I'm hoping its a short wait... at the most they have to order the part from Germany.

You've got to be kidding me. Unless you have made some serious mods to the suspension they'd better fix it for free.

You should leave that as a last resort man. EDC suspension issues just leave the suspension in 'sport' mode, which is the default setting when disconnected.

Keep us posted OP. You might have an issue with the system (ECU), rather than a single shock. That's the bad part about this kind of suspension; something can always go wrong. Good luck.

I got the same message at about 1000 miles on my car. Turned out that one of the rear shocks was defective. I Ended up getting all four replaced under warranty, no questions asked.

I'll have to look extra hard. It might be in the fine print

I hope its not the ECU. I have a feeling that might take a while to get here from Germany.
