Since it came out, I have always thought of the 8 series as BMW's flagship.

Looking at used car pricing, 2019 M850i cars are priced in the $80-90K range pre-owned which is very comparable to a brand new M4 Comp xDrive.

What would be a better buy? Never thought of it until I stumbled across CPOs and saw the pricing is very similar nowadays.

I dont have an M850ix but do have an M8 GC Comp and a G80 X Drive-- so this might be a little off vs what you easked but the M850iX is no slouch in performance.

The M8 is a big hammer that sledges and crushes the competition on the expressways and from a dig. Its very rapid in a straight line and can hold its own even with heft in the bigger bends. Its very luxurious inside with alcantara all over. I love it for what it is, a GT Cruiser or Crusher with a very unique look being the widest BMW ever made.

The G80 is the scalpel that out punches in its weight class. The chassis, steering, handling, all are exceptional for its heft and it really is a more fun car to drive and push than the M8's S63tu engine. The S63tu is easily driven fast while the S58 begs to be ripped to the redline. The interior has been bumped up over prior M3/4 iterations and the luxury is closer to the M8 but its still not there.

The M8 is quicker/faster but not as fun to drive and when I get out of one and into the other Im equally impressed. If I could only have one; I wont lie- its the G80. But thats kind of where Im at in my life and what I like to do in regards to real world street driving. Im glad I have both though.

Another thing to keep in mind is the m850i isn't a true M car. The M performance cars are dynamically similar to the base models but with "m-sport" suspensions. On the other hand true M cars (i.e. M8, M4, etc) have bespoke suspension setups which make a significant difference in handling and capabilities. The m850i is a great cruiser, very luxurious, but the M4 is a true M car and in another league when it comes to handling.

Thanks a lot for the input. Those are 2 beautiful cars. I do not have that luxury yet so I can only go with one. I am currently driving a 2018 F80 M3 and placed an order in for a g83 M4. Currently have an allocation but vehicle is still in production.

While waiting, just noticed that pricing between a used m850i is now comparable to a new g83 M4. Now if M8 pricing goes down a bit more, I would switch over to the M8. As you and other posters have said, the m850i is not a "true M" and I may miss that engagement that I get today from the F80.

Thanks. I currently drive an F80 and one thing I would say is that I do not find it "luxurious". Now when I test drove a G80 for a short 10 mins (not the most, I know), I felt it is a significantly improved cabin that will give me that added luxury I've been lacking on the F80.

Very true. That lack of luxury feeling and refinement is what kept me away from BMW in the past. The G series cars are a major improvement in that department across the board.

I've only driven an M850i Convertible. It was FAST. Hitting triple digit speeds was EASY... but it just didn't feel sharp. It was very luxurious, the top down was great, but it felt bigger than it was. The M8, I'm sure, is a much better driver's car. The G80 on the other hand... handles like a smaller car than it is at the limit-the opposite of the M850i Convertible. It's super sharp, tons of grip, and has usable, but still visceral power delivery.

M850 is not a true M car and does not have the power and suspension of M8 but as far as body and luxurious is the same and N63tu engine ( with the same torque of S63tu) among with ZF8 tranny is still powerful.
Comparing M850 to F80 M3, its alot bigger and heavier but compare to G8x its not such a big car!

Thanks for the comments here. I was able to get an allocation on a G83 M4 now. Going to be my first convertible.

Since this will be a $90K+ car, been looking into options in a similar price range and a CPO circa 2019 F90 M5 or m850i is in the ball park.

Just my opinion but the M850I will not hold value as well as the G8x. All prices are up with supply issues but 3 years or so from now I feel the M850i will drop alot harder than a G8x.

Dude that G80 looks f-ing AMAZING.

And I like the 8 series BMW; but that color on the G80 is phenomenal. Great Vision on picking that color!!!

M850i coupe will beat a m4 and m2C around a track. This has been tested a few times. It's close but the m850i is actually faster. The feel and such therein, that's different.

I had to google this because I didn’t believe it. If you’re referring to this, that was in comparison to the F8x cars and they weren’t running on the same track configuration either.

Sport auto has the M850i around Hockenheim GP at 1:57, and the M4 (xDrive) at 1:53.9. They also have the M4 going around the Nurburgring faster than the full-on M8 Comp. Not sure where you’re getting that the M850i is faster. Even straight line speed from a dig the M4 is quicker.

I bought my wife an m850i. It’s the reason I traded in my c8 for an M4. I can promise you that the M4 is faster than the m850i.

Yeah, I'm sure you are correct about that. Didn't one of car mags get a 2.8 0-60 and a 10.9x 1/4 mile for the M4?

Not sure… but the M4 is definitely faster than the C8 by a lot on the top end. The m850i had a better 60 to 130 than the C8. I think the M4 can run 10s stock in cool air. I’m gonna try as soon as this heat lets up here in Florida.

I rent a lot of these cars. As in a lot of them. Generally for a week at a time or more and get 1400 miles. I had a 2023 M4 Comp convertible a month ago and currently have a 2023 M850i convertible. They are such different cars. The twin turbo 6 cyl. M4 has MDM and you can actually disable the front drive. Add to that the extra sport settings for M, and the sound, and high revving engine and the tuning of the transmission, it is incredible fun. Actually love that car. Currently driving the M850i, and it’s such a different machine. That V8. Did I mention that V8? Wow. That V8. Grumble and pops. Took on a Lambo along the 5 near Pendleton. That car popped more, but it was competitive. The M4 comp is so fun with the high raving 6. But did I mention the M850i v8? It’s apples and oranges.

I can’t decide which I like better. Maybe that’s a good thing. My normal driver is a 2022 z4 m40i. I love that car. 50-50 balance. Roadster. Low mass considering 382 HP. It’s incredibly fun to drive.

But when I get into the M4 or the M850i, while of course they are yet additional installations of the ultimate driving machine, at some level, they are not even comparable. Gotta just decide which one you like.

Needless to say, I like them all!

Haven’t driven the latest M2, but it’s edgy lines are growing on me. And it’s on the list.

I would suggest look at price of ownership and depreciation comparing the two. 8 series seem to take some of the largest depreciations in a pretty short time. Full M8 prices are 30% below msrp now on the market for a year old with less then 5k miles on some examples. On the other hand, having a more spacious larger car is a nice feature. For me personally the price of the m850 is not justified. As mentioned already, it’s not a full M car and power difference from 850 and M4 comp is not too different.
