4.10 is way too much gear reduction for a DCT car.

Edit: Upon further reading, appears to be just for the manual.

I have always thought that E92 M3 gear ratios are rather long. This could turn out to be a great upgrade.

1. Top Speed is not really affected. Theoretical top speed with stock diff is 196 mp/h (315 km/h). Theoretical top speed with 4.10 diff is 183 mph (296 km/h).

2. Speedo accuracy does not change. This was also true for the E46. It measures the rotations of the wheel.

3. About shifting gears more often, you are probably right. But with the shorter gear you can skip downshifting many times, so it could go either way, depending on driving style and traffic conditions.

4. You have to rev the motor more to reach the same Autobahn speeds, so this means more fuel, more noise and more motor wear.

Not much of an improvement for that much coin, not to mention install cost. For drag it would be cool, but do people really - and I mean really - drag these things? If you are, you should've bought a proper drag car...e.g. 09 CTS-V or C63.

And if you road race/track the car, spend the money on tires and brake pads/rotors/lines. Just my 2 cents...

People can do whatever they want with their car, and I WILL drag my car as well as track my car. I like that it is well rounded and can do everything well.

I was thinking some more about this and I bet the hot upgrade for the DCT's will be going to 3.62 gearing which is the E46 M3, M5, and M6 final drive.

+1...a valid point and 6.5% increase of applied torque...over 25lb/ft over the whole rev-band would be great. For track cars, it'd be the deal...but for $2700...they're on some real crack.

Match it to a aftermarket ECU upgrade with a higher rev limiter too...

With your upgraded motor you will definitely not be at a loss for torque, the shorter gears will feel like a rocket ship combined with that.

Best thing is, it is an OEM part, should not be hard to find the 3.62, especially considering how many M5/M6 guys swapped out to the Dinan 3.91 it should be relatively cost effective.

JDM, I don't think you'll be happy with numerically higher ratio on your stroker motor. That's just my hunch.

I'm surprised none of you drag race guys even mentioned getting the same torque increase through a tire size reduction. 295-30-18 tires would have almost identical effect as the 4.10 differential...and for a lot less money...and without any of the negative side-effects associated with the higher final drive ratio.

No, going from 35 to 30 is not as large of gear reduction as from 3.85 to 4.10. Perhaps you are referring to going to an 18 from a 19, but most won't want to do that. The cost of new rims and tires is greater than the new Diff.

Consdering his car is a cab and has the extra weight, gearing changes may be very effective. M6 Cab guys love the 3.91's. First, we would have to see how the power from the stroker is being put down.

Yes, it is close, combine the two ideally. You will want some sidewall to be able to flex with all that extra torque.

According to BMW , the coupe M6 does 0-60 in 4.6 and the Vert M6 does 0-60 in 4.7 eventhough it weights 400lbs more than the coupe too. But hides the weight difference well since both cars have much higher tourque, compared to the M3. I cant wait to see how the R46 coupe and R46 Vert will perform against each other since both will high higher tourque. Im dont remember now, but I think its supposed to be 70-80 tourque increase.

Exactly what I was thinking, DCT doesn't make shorter gearing a chore.

3.91 would be really, REALLY short.

3.62 is already almost twice as short as the 4.10 for the manual.
