I agree. Annoying as it is every time I ask it to go around a corner at anything quicker than 5/10ths, at 63,000 miles from new our F34 335 has been the most reliable and low-stress BMW of the 6 we've had so far. Doesn't hurt that it's the best-riding BMW I can remember being in short of an E38/other big cushy BMW's that predate the race to the bottom on ride harshness brought on by ultra low profile runflats-all-the-things (that's a trait unique to the F34, the other F30's are still typical too much compression not enough sidewall runflat, just better than E90). It lost an injector at 49k and the radio head unit at like 25k. Our E90 335xi was on its 9th coil pack, 3rd fuel pump, and had weird crap like door lock actuators and the mecha seal had gone wrong by now.
The M3 is clearly a Gripen. Nobody wants to own one unless they're insufferable pedants who know who Kimi Raikkonnen and Marcus Gronholm are

That said, I think it's quite interesting how car mags talk about how soft modern BMWs have become and then they drive an F8X M car and they cry about how aggressive it is and that you can't daily drive it. |

I did dozens of road trips in both cars and there was never the slightest doubt of which car was faster at any and all rpms. There isn't a single rpm where the E46M felt faster than the E9X. I tracked both cars in the same day many, many times. Again, never got the impression the S65 required extra revving to move. I have a 6MT M3 as well as a DCT. Neither one feels 'slow' or not suited to street use. 4000rpm WOT in 6th gear feels quite fast, well in the realm of getting arrested for display of speed or whatever. Have you weighed yours? Because I've weighed my E46 and E92, back to back, same scale, both cars completely OEM, both full tanks of gas. The E46 is 3500# and the E92 is 3600#. There's a 100lb difference between them. I give zero credence to the weights published on forums, where people are using 'around 1/4 of a tank of gas' or removing carpeting or other retardedness. |

It's pretty common to hear from M3F guys that the E9XM feels "gutless". I wouldn't call it gutless but it definitely doesn't' have the same midrange response at all. There just isn't a lot going on between 4 and 5k in the 90M and that range is very strong in the 46M. That's all I'm saying. This is really my biggest problem with the E9XM - if it had a bit more oomph between 4 and 6k it would literally be perfect. Mind you - my 46M is a very healthy example and my E90M is a bone stock '08, so..... But yeah, I was guessing on the weights - I would say my butt dyno tends to agree with your readings in that the E9XM really doesn't feel much heavier than the 46M... only just notably so. It also doesn't feel much bigger either, just a tiny bit. |

Here we are, 4 pages later. Thanks for all the input! It did sort of morph from F30 vs E9X M3 to something else to something else... but all good stuff. I have another round of test drives this weekend scheduled.

Link to the Post where Kaiv corner balanced it (and it's actually lighter now, as I'm running 16# wheels and removed the rood rack-- so your e46 M3 coupe is probably more like 150# heavier than my M3 wagon with the spare removed) ... and your e46 coupe is 500# heaver than my full interior (including carpet) e46 M3 coupe (5/8 tank gas, as that's what I corner balance at (half way point of the portion of the gas tank I use)), though I've put some significant effort into lightening that one.
