Going from //M to ///AMG
Sold my 11” e92 m3 a few months back and have been looking at either w204 Black Series or the new w205 AMG C63 to replace it. Ended up going with the newer model for the better interior, tech, warranty, and tuning potential. A few thoughts:
1. Exterior: The AMG is very wide and low with a great presence but I still think the design of the M3 is classic. The paint on the AMG looks much higher in quality though and provide a more expensive looks. 2. Interior: My M3 had the extended fox red and it was nice but the AMG interior’s build, materials, fit & finish is a league away. Everything seems solid, well put together, and expensive in the Mercedes. It’s worth noting that the leather in the AMG (everywhere!) is thick but not as soft or felt as nice as the one inside the M3. 3. Engine: The AMG revs quickly, maybe as quick as the M3, and makes tons of torque and power. I think it may even be faster than the super charged v8 in my F-type. We’ll find this out soon. The engine pulls hard but does not feel as special as the M3 v-8. 4. Gearbox: In auto mode, AMG’s seven speed works really well holding each gear to red line in Race mode and offers blips in three of the five available driving modes. In manual modes it will down shift when asked to but not as instantaneously as the DCT in my M3. For daily driving though, the AMG gearbox is much smoother and less noticeable. 5. Sounds: The AMG sounds loud, angry, with a sharp bark when pressed. It does not have the melodic scream that the S65 has though. The AMG brings lots of volume but with less character then the M3. 6. Chassis and Brakes: I loved the way I can fly through corners in my M3 and though the AMG would be heavy but was pleasantly surprised to find out that it moves light on its feet and with great grips. The steering is a bit heavier in the AMG but offers about the same feed backs as the M3. The CC brakes this car comes with is amazing! Here’s a photo of my now-gone M3, and a few of the AMG. |

Congrats on the purchase!
I actually work for Mercedes and have had the opportunity to drive the whole AMG lineup and i agree with many of your statements when comparing to your e92 M3. The new C63S packs a crazy punch and has torque for days due to the top mounted turbos and loses traction whenever out of -comfort mode-. Flick it into sport+ and you're in for a hell of a ride...or even race considering you got the "S". I had a C43 AMG for a year and ended up dumping it for my E90 M3 which puts a smile on my face daily and i have no regrets but of course when moving to a 63 it is a different story Once you go through the break in period things in the AMG settle down and power starts coming out to its full potential. Although the W204 / black and 507 growl the new body is definitely worth it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I am tempted by the 2014-era E63 AMG Bi Turbo, which has twin turbos, AWD and is easily modded to 600 rhwp. Weighs 4400 lbs, but puts the power down and goes like stink. I don't track my car so the loss of handling compared to the 700 lb lighter E90M3 may not matter. You can find nice examples for $60k plus or minus $10k.

Nice!!! Never had a Mercedes but I'd to the C63 amg too. Ive heard some modified exhaust ones and wow that v8 is a beast too. Thanks for the right up... looking at those interior pictures, I must say though, their red doesn't compare to our red (especially in extended version); theirs looks more boy racer to me.

You can count me as a lifetime BMW fanatic, but if my eyes ever tempted to cheat on BMW it would be with the AMG's interior quality and styling. Just beautiful.

Incredible car. Love the design of the 63. Really the only MB that I like. What upgrades do you have planned?

No upgrades at the moment. Perhaps some carbon fiber exteriors pieces after a year or so. Eventually, when I'm jaded with all this power, a tune will be next. $3k for an additional 100 horse power and torque is not bad!

The E63 AMG wagon is pretty rare. About 4700 lbs also. I would consider one since it is so practical but they are at a premium over the sedans. We have an 08 535xit with JB4 that weighs about 4000 lbs and might make 350 rwhp. The E63 would be a nice step up.

One of the ultimate sleepers. I also love how rare they are. I do wish they were still RWD.

I would hope the C63S would be better...it's a whole generation newer and it's got the cost to match
![]() It's mighty powerful and has a better exhaust note for sure, BUT...as you mentioned, the E92 has its own special character, and it might be subjective, but I do feel more confident in the E92. Regardless, it's a fine choice. |

Yes, the e92 was /is a special car. I owned two of them (09' and 11') and still feel like the design is timeless (better looking than my new AMG), and the character of the engine is very very special. I've not experienced many cars that gave me the rush as the e92 did when it's climbing to red line.
